99 Astra, is it even worth paying. You'll get a 99 Astra for same amount for replacing an engine

Have the car a 1.4 for 18 years nearly so its a lot of sentimental value with small use and around 88000 miles on the clock, saw a 2001 1.2 stating having 92000 miles for 500 euros, not sure wether sold or not.Its the same colour as mine but the paint on mine is faded from starting its life in a high salt coastal enviroment

You would probably have to swap the gearbox and ECU too. Even with sentimental values in mind, you'd be off your tree going to that trouble imo.

18 years in a Opel. Op there are so much nicer places to be.

    Try something different.

At 88k engine gone not so good did belt snap? Or oil starvation.

Get yourself an upgrade you will never look back.

Head gasket another contender for finishing that model off?

I think it's waving bye bye time to it in the scrap yard. I know some can get attached to their cars but when it hits you in the pocket more than buying another model, it's time to say bye bye.

Problem there isn't price as much as the fact that a lot of tge 16v astras lose their heads due to a central oil gallery blocking up, starving the cams. So any replacement you get could be well worth removing the head from, to poke around the little hole in the block and head, while ensuring the new gasket doesn't cover it over..

Simply taking an engine from a donor car, removing yours, replacing it and driving it on? I'd imagine a full day's work/labour assuming the mechanic in question is experienced. I'd guess around the 400 mark - they're not a difficult engine swap to do, but that's exactly what you'd get at a price that low. Just the engine swap, no timing belt business, gasket, clutch, or any of that. Most garages will recommend the other jobs - which would be a lot cheaper with the engine/bix already out.
