    Hi,
My parents are looking to get a new car. They currently have a toyota corolla (02) and toyota avensis (04). Both are in reasonable condition.

They're looking to downsize to just one car. So the plan is to trade in the corolla for scrappage when purchasing a new car. Currently they're looking at the toyota auris or toyota yaris. and plan to sell the avensis.

I've just started researching this for them so I'm hoping to get some suggestions. The max price is 20,000 though lower is better and scrappage is a must.

    Any suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

New Hyundai i20 is available with a generous scrappage scheme, comes with a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty too.

Or if they want something with a slightly higher driving position but similar in size then they have the i20 Active:

If they are used to Toyota's they will probably be best served with another Toyota. An auris or a corolla would be the best bet. I wouldn't bother with the yaris.

    Thanks for the advice.

We're now looking at the Toyota auris, Hyundai i20 and the Suzuki baleno. They've also decided that they want an automatic.

Any advice on the baleno? My dad seems to like it but I don't know much about it. My understanding is that it's not a common car in ireland and I imagine that parts may become scarce in the future. Is this a reasonable assumption? They plan to keep this car for a very long time so it will need work at some point.

I'm leaning towards the auris closely followed by the i20.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

I think you are making the right decision. Suzuki are ok but they are cheaply built. Definitely behind the other two you are looking at in terms of quality.

I'd say you will do well to get any dealer getting you one of them in automatic, could be some odd colour or unsold stock.

Did they look at the Nissan Note? 4k scrappage on them. Available in automatic (CVT) with plenty of interior space while not being huge on the outside. Not the most cutting edge of cars but might fit the bill for your folks.

Nice high seating position in the note

Would you get an Auris Hybrid for that money, with some sort of scrapage?

They'd be an awesome car. Plus, if you don't like it, they'll swap it for the petrol/diesel equivalent in 172.

I certainly wouldn't agree with the comment Suzuki's are cheaply built. My sis bought a new Swift 8 years ago & I sold it for her with 120km on the clock & not one thing failed on the car while she owned it. I've owned an Hyundai car & I wouldn't say the built quality is any better. In fact I'd buy a Suzuki over a Kia or Hyundai any day. I like the look of the Baleno, haven't driven one though. The Auris would be a good shout although my gf has a 2013 diesel Auris & it burns oil. Otherwise no other problems with 45k on the clock.

Cheaply built and reliability are 2 different things. The interior quality is poor on suzuki's, they can also get quiet rusty underneath as they age, although newer models are less prone to this. They are incredibly dated too in terms of design. Tbh they are just outclassed by almost everything else in their categories.

    Thanks everyone.

They've decided on one of the following:

    Toyota CHR
    Nissan quasqai
    Nissan note
    Hyundai i20

They will probably just go for whichever one they like to most when the see it in the garage. Right now they're leaning towards the Toyota as they both drive Toyotas.
