00 Nissan Micra won't start...

    Hi,

I'm hoping someone has a magic bullet for this..

Bought a 00 Micra for my MIL. After a week or 2 the battery died. She doesn't use it much and i reckoned the car was laying up before we bought it so I replaced the battery and it ran fine again for another couple of weeks before the battery died again so i took it away to try and find the source of the drain..

While i had it sitting out front i removed the battery and fuses but when i put them all back in it was no longer starting. The EML os flashing amber which tells me the NATS system is probably the culprit.

It came with 2 keys and tried the second one but no joy..

It's an old car so i'm not bothered about anyone stealing it.. Is it possible to disable the NATS and get it running again or do i have to go to a dealer ?

Really grateful for any help or advice anyone can offer...

    Thanks..

No guarantee this will work but worth trying.

Put the key in the ignition and turn it on (don't start it)

Leave it like this for about half an hour or longer, turn it off and remove key.

    Now try it.

You will need to have a battery charger on it for the half hour, wont work otherwise.

May work, may not but worked for me previously.

    No joy..

Thought I was getting somewhere, the car started a couple of times but dies again within a couple of seconds..

It's as if there's no fuel getting to it so i'm assuming it's still the NATS causing the problem..

    Thanks anyway..

    Something to ponder over... https://www.micra.org.uk/threads/2003-micra-k12-wont-start.56736/

A suggestion there may be interference from other devices using same frequency, like a toll tag. I dunno but worth a read for some other suggestions.

    Cheers for the link..

I've learned a lot about multimeters, batteries and NATS the last few days :D

It was starting to stress me out so i've walked away and will give the local Nissan garage a shout when they open.. There doesn't seem to be a way around the NATS so i'll get the keys working again and then try and figure out the drain..

I'm suffering the same issue here with my 04 Micra but think I've narrowed it down to a stretched Timing Chain :( Which is big money to repair. We have the starter replaced , Chamshaft sensor and Throttle Body over the weekend. Tried again and ran like a dream until this morning and wouldn't start again. Will Start if you pump the accelerator while the initial Crank starts..But not always.

    Dead spot on alternator?

id hazard a guess that when putting the fuses back in maybe you forgot one or mixed one up wih an empty slot.
was the drivers window left open whilst raining by any chance? ive seen a few of that model micra where the window was left open and the transponder ring around the ignition barrell got wet triggering the nats system

I'd put money on the alternator, dead battery plus new battery plus new dead battery generally equates to battery not being charged.

A new battery will go a few days of driving before dying.

Check the bearing isn't rough and feel the alternator itself after the car's been running a while, if it's hot it's probably dead.
You can also test it with a multimeter/power probe but then not everyone would have one handy.

    That's the battery anyway.

    NATS...
The chip is inside the ECU so if you have triggered the immobiliser you'll need a new ECU, key and ignition barrel, can also be sourced from a parts car.
    I'd hope it's the fuses.

Check the terminal connectors also. I had one with a hair line crack which did a similar thing.

The immobiliser warning (flashing light) may be a symptom of a dodgy battery/electrics rather than the cause of your problems. I had a bad battery in my Peugeot 406 and it would cause the immobiliser to malfunction (flashing light on dashboard as if it rejected my key transponder), but even when it did work (occasionally did - was very erratic) there wasn't enough charge to start the engine. New battery and everything was fine.
