Whats a really good professional golf ball and where would you buy them? Would the golf balls sold in Heatons or Elverys sports be any good?

    Thanks in advance.

    Probably not.

If you want good golf balls (like they use on the telly!), McGuirks, Halpenny or any shop at a golf course will have Titleist Pro V1 or Titleist Pro V1x, Taylormade Tour Preferred or Tour Preferred X, Callaway Hex and there are plenty more. Some courses don;t have a shop but may sell balls in the clubhouse bar etc.

Best thing to do is ask in a proper golf shop.

Genuinely not trying to be smart, but if you have to ask then you don't need premium balls.

I assume its a non golfer looking to buy a present for a golfer.

The balls recommended above fit the bill. You might find some of them in Elverys but any specialist golf shop will have them. Price is also a fairly good indicator of quality.

Golf is surrounded by marketing hype and as you can see from the above replies, no one buys into that more than golfers themselves (I also include myself in that bunch), what you refer to as professional balls aren't all they are cracked up to be, yes the price is premium but there is no noticeable or tangible benefit, also we (the golfers) conveniently tend to forget that the players on tour are receiving theses balls free of charge in a product placement type of thing.

Back to your original question, yes both those shops you mention have perfectly good golf, any mid range €20 Nike, Callaway, Srixon, Taylormade or Titliest ball would be more than adequate, you can if you like splash out on Titleist Pro1's which can be bought for €40 per dozen ATM (usually €60ish). The choice is yours.

You assume right I don,t play golf but the Father does. So I got the Titleist Pro V1 golf balls in Heatons after and he was happy with them. It was 30 euro,s for 12 balls.

I went for a golf ball fitting and was told that unless you have a swing speed of 100 plus you should stay clear of pro v's as we can't compress the ball thus losing many yards off the tee.

I swing over 100 but i don't use these balls normally, if it will spin backwards it will spin sideways too. That means bigger slices and hooks on miss-hits. Most golfers want the ball to travel as straight as possible. I'm not good enough to get controlled spin and i want to minimize slices and hooks too. I like to use some of the lower spin callaway, nike and srixon balls. In very dry weather during a good spell in the summer i might use higher spin balls to try and hold the greens a little better.

I see 18 handicappers with swing speeds in the mid 70's out with pro v's. It just seems like a waste of money.

Out of interest where does one go to get a golf ball fitting?? Is there a charge for this? as its something Id be really interested in! as I read recently the the golf ball you use is the most important part of your equipment! I think also Rory might of said this but dont know how true this actually is as it been the most important part especially for us mere mortals

I remember this point being put to a PGA tour pro. He laughed and said something along the lines of "If that's true then I can't compress the ball with any of my irons and Tiger Woods can't compress it with anything less than a 6 iron"

    For PGA Tour players (average):
The average clubhead speed with an 8-iron is 87 mph; ball speed is 115 mph and carry distance is 160 yards.
Clubhead speed increases by 2 mph from club to club.
