black screen flicker when watching HD channels

I have a triax freeview satellite receiver.
Whenever i watch a HD channel, like RTE2 HD, the screen occasionally flickers between a black screen and the tv show.

Each flicker lasts for about a second. There is no pattern to it, and it appears intermittent.

Ive tried the triax box on two different tv's, a sharp and a samsung and the issue is present through both, making the triax box the most likely culprit.

I have heard this may be an issue with broadcasters switching between 1080i & 1080p, but i dont know how i can mitigate this.

Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

First of all you need to tell us whether it is a Freeview or a Satellite receiver.

Second if it is Freeview you need to tell us your location.

Im not really sure what the difference between a freeview or satellite receiver is.
Best i can say is that its a box by Triax that gets a signal from a dish on the side of the house, but the signal it receives gives us the free channels.

    My location is in Roscommon.

If it's only happened today I'd blame the rain.

It's been happening intermittently for the past 6 months.

Initially we thought it might be our old TV, but we got a brand new TV from. A. Different manufacturer this week and the issue persists.

You're more than likely not getting RTE from the dish: presumably the problem happens on UK channels too?

Assuming you're receiving RTE from a terrestrial transmitter, you'll get it on the new TV without the Triax box, & the new TV might even have its own satellite tuner for UK channels: what's the make & model?

Rte is defo comming through the triax box, as to watch it, I have to switch to the triax in our and change the channels until I find Rte, on the triax remote.

The new TV is a sharp 50 inch, I'll get the exact model number later, I just need someone to help me get in the back of the TV cabinet!

Right, so the Sharp is actually the new TV.

Anyhow, what I mean is that you don't necessarily need the Triax box to get RTE (& other Irish channels), possibly not with either TV, as the Triax is probably a combo satellite/terrestrial receiver, & RTE is being received terrestrially. (RTE is also available free on satellite, & UK channels are available terrestrially in some places, including parts of Roscommon, I would think.)

Do you have 2 coaxial cables connected to the Triax, 1 of which will have a screw-on f-connector for satellite, & the terrestrial type which just pushes in?

I wouldn't bother looking for the model no. of the Sharp TV, maybe see if it has an f-connector on it, but I'd doubt it.

Just to clarify, this is not the same satellite as one normally associates with FTA UK channels, but is one that requires separate hardware ....... referred to as Saorsat as it carries most (not all) of the Saorview channels only.

OK. Freeview is a UK terrestrial service received through an aerial. Only available in Ireland in the north or near the border or possible the east from Wales. A satellite receiver receives via a dish pointed at a satellite. There are also combo boxes which combine a satellite receiver and a terrestrial receiver (but not Freeview as I they are not certified). I guess your Triax is a combo box. You may have an aerial problem.

I had a similar problem with my Sky box a while ago. Turned out to be a HDMI cable at fault.
