Advice on buying a Mercedes A-Class

Hey, my better half is on at me to buy a second hand (141, 1.5 diesel) Merc A-Class.  I'm hesitant to go for a car like that as they're known as an expensive car and I'm thinking the maintenance and running costs will be expensive.  We had a bad experience a few years ago with a 1 Series BMW so I'm cautious about buying similar cars.
Firstly, the mileage is putting me off (57k), I've been told this is normal, is it?  The car tax is cheap, insurance will go up a small bit.  How about the yearly service and associated parts, is this expensive?  It's a diesel engine, I've never had a diesel car, are they much cheaper than petrol to run?
    I'd appreciate any advice, thanks.

57k miles would be normal for a now 3 year old diesel that was used as intended. The 1.5 litre diesel engine in the A Class is a Renault engine and also found in Nissan and Dacia cars. It has been around over a decade and it is a tried and tested engine at this stage. But like all premium branded cars they can be expensive to maintain especially if you stick with main dealers.

The real question you need to ask is do you actual need a diesel car or does your driving style suit one?

Thanks for the reply. We don't really make long journey to really benefit from diesel.  I'll go view it again and then decide I think.

If your doing a lot of short city stop/start journeys then your not going to benefit from a diesel, better off looking at a petrol model instead.
