Paying a builder - still issues

    Long story short.
I had a lot of the walls in my house stripped of wallpaper and skimmed then painted.
Things were not left long enough to cure...Job was paid for in full.

Paint bubbled and plastering was generally a little crappy in places.
So builder came back to skim....left to dry and paint.
He also put up some plasterboard around fireplace and some pipes and repainted and boxed these off (I was told this would be an extra 200 euro).

However one wall is still very badly finished with large bumps all over (literally one part has a large bump running down the full length).

The builder is now sending me texts asking for payment of this 200 euro extra (Claiming he is "upset" that he hasn't been paid for material and hard work), am I within my rights to not pay this extra 200 euro until the wall is properly repaired? I honestly feel its only leverage I have to ensure issues with badly done wall are resolved.

(apologies if this is incorrect thread - couldn't see where else to post)

When you say builder what trade is he? A builder usually builds extentions & stuff. It's a qualified plasterer that you should have doing the job. If he is doing the painting himself he sounds more like a handyman.

If the 'builder' did the plastering & painting himself then that's your problem right there.. He's a chancer.

He was advertised as a painter decorator with 20 years experience (apologies). Am I right to withhold the money?

It's your decision really, depends on how bad it is. For future reference a painter should not be plastering, or vice versa. Did you see any of his work beforehand online or anywhere?

I don't believe so. You can't expect a perfect finish on the plasterwork when you employ a painter. If you employed a plasterer I would hold it back but not a painter. This isn't legal advise. It's just what I would do. I wouldn't expect a painter to do a good job plastering

If he said he was capablve of doing the job you arranged for him to do it in good faith.
Tell him you cannot pay him as you are waiting on a quote for repair works to the poor quality works.

Take pictures and document all texts and phonecalls.
You can lodge a small claim for the rest of your money back if the cost of the repair is higher.

He is in the wrong you were uneducated in hireing him but that does not excuse terrible workmanship.

    DO NOT PAY THIS CHANCER

Thank you for this. I thought the same tbh going with my gut.
I have already given them a fair chunk of money to be honest and work in other areas is fine.
I have already got other quotes of about 200 euro to fix wall and repaint

    Pay him.
You knew his standard of work was poor yet got him back to do more, and it was bad too. He's been consistent, I can't see what else you expected.

    Ignore this advice .

Another way of putting it could be he knew he wasn't capable of doing the work to an acceptable standard yet did it badly again and expected paying .
