Volvo S90

My apologies to anyone looking at one of these, but I was behind one earlier and thought it was a Hyundai Sonata.

Even after realising it was a S90 (the 162 reg gave it away) it still looked like a Sonata.

Am I the only one to think this?

The rear end isn't its best feature, but in the right spec, I think its ones of the best looking cars on the road.

Did the massive V O L V O on the boot lid not give it away? Don't see it myself, I think it's a fine looking bus especially in estate form.

They made a pig's arse of the rear. Reminds me of the first generation Citroen C5 rear

The interior looks stunning in them.

It's such a shame you can't have one with more than a four cylinder engine, though. Fair enough for the T8 plug in, but really there should be five and six cylinder options available, they're much quieter and more refined than a four cylinder unit, characteristics I would have thought were important in a car obviously designed for comfort and luxury above all else. Volvo used to make a straight six that fitted in a front wheel drive car after all, so no reason why they couldn't do so for the S90.

    wait for the face lift.
New boot lid, new light clusters and bumper and it will be stunning. It's fantastic from every other angle.

Much better looking in estate form. Chassis on them is meant to be brilliant as well I read.

Yes - that's what I'm planning to replace a 5 series touring with 283,000km after 4 years! Just thought the saloon could have a better looking backside - unusual for the estate version of a car to look so much better!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,712 ✭✭✭✭R.O.R

V90 is also still being built in Sweden, so has a reasonable factory order lead time of 10 weeks ish.

S90 production has moved to China so lead time is now 6-9 months, which will kill an already slow selling (but fantastic all round) car, with a bit of an ugly ass.

Not that unusual, there are many cars that look better in estate form (my opinion). A4, A6, 3-series, 5-series to name a few.

Wow, who the hell is going to wait that amount of time, what a decision.

The lack of a 6 cylinder option is the reason a relative won't buy one. He was willing to leave an A8 and get one he liked it so much but the engine options put paid to that idea.

If the s80 is anything to go by a 2 year old one of these Will be a good buy.

I was told recently the xc90 has a 4 to 5 month waiting period but 6 to 9 is mad

The 2L 4 cylinder PHEV T8 is fairly great though. I can tell you it's a much nicer drive than the 3.5L V6 Hybrid of the Lexus RX.

Diesel for the Business user is the only option I'm afraid.

Volvo are now doing 0% finance in these.
Unusual I would have thought for a new model.
Hardly a sign that they are a great sales success

I'd say it's a reaction to the recent offers being bantered about by BMW and Mercedes.

Was looking at new and nearly new models for sale in the UK, Jesus the prices are through the roof for the nicely specced models. £50k for some of them. That must be an €80k car here.

Ye, looksindex.cfm?fuseaction=page&pageID=35904&parentID=23667 nice in the black. At least he got a bit of poke with the D4 (190PS), don't think I'd fancy the D3 (150PS) in a car that size, never mind a fully loaded V90.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

A Volvo Ireland Demo model drove me to a customer on Tuesday night. According to my man in Volvo, it's roughly €76k with all the options fitted, and it's only a D4 Auto.

Unfortunately, I have to pick it up on the way home tomorrow night and keep it for the weekend. Must see what tunes I have that would sound good in the Gothenburg Opera House (one of the Bowers & Wilkins sound system options),.

It's a good job the pretty much drives itself, as the touch screen centre console takes a lot of messing to make most stuff work

Look at the rims on this bad boy:

Have to hand it to them, their factory wheel options are fairly out there.

Yep I wasn't necessarily complimenting them, they seem a little outrageous. The multispoke 20"s though look the business combined with the sky blue paint.

Ah offering zero % finance on a new car is a terrible panic move. Shows the manufacturer has no faith in the product. Same with BMW offering 4k off new 5 Series - mental stuff.

Black seems to be the only colour that makes the rear end look half decent.

It could also suggest that the market for these type of cars has changed where the gap between non premium and premium brands in terms of product has shortened. These premium brands now have be more competitive in order to keep some buyers from moving to non premium brands without loosing much if anything in quality. It might also suggest that premium brands are being driven by market share and volume too these days.

Not really; people here have ready access to the UK market for new/nearly new. Manufacturers have not increased prices to fully take account of the fall in GBP. Without a reduction in Irish prices or attractive finance deals, a lot of new buyers would bypass Irish distributors/dealers and look to the UK for a 10% or more price differential.

Had a look in local Volvo dealer.
They have a v90 and a v90 cross country too which are much better looking than the s90.
They must be struggling to sell them otherwise they wouldn't do the zero percent. They're not offering it in the xc90 which they seem to sell easily enough even though it's more expensive.
The interior is lovely but I do wonder about the touch screen in every day use as it seems very distracting.
The standard 17" wheels are awful as the car is so large on them. Needs 18" minimum which are 1000 euro upgrade.

    You mean these wheels?

    407203.jpg

I'd prefer a darker exterior - think this is Osmium Grey, and Tinted Windows, but this one would do :D

Volvo haven't sent me the full spec, but it's got:
Head Up Display with Winter Pack
    Active bending LED lights
    Sunroof
    Surround View Camera
    Park Assist Pilot
    BLISS
    4 Zone Climate Control
    Electric Boot Lid
    Heated Steering Wheel
    Rear Air Suspension
Power Front Seats with memory/extending cushions/power side support & lumbar
    Keyless Drive
    Bowers & Wilkins Sound System
    Drive Select

As well as the standard equipment of Active Cruise Control, Pilot Assist, Nav.

Lovely car to drive, but no where near as much fun as a 5 Series, but not really supposed to be. Fantastically comfortable and relaxing for motorway wafting, and the Active Cruise is great in traffic.

Interior is amazing, but the Touch Screen system is a bit of a safety issue in my opinion - hard to navigate through and only sort of safe when you've got the active cruise/lane assist on to enable you to take your eyes off the road to figure out which screen you need to be on to get to the control you need.

    407204.jpg

Took me a good while to figure out where to go to adjust the height of the HUD - probably something I should have done before setting off rather than doing it while driving!

What was the ride like on 20" wheels?

One thing I noticed on the Volvo when I was at the dealer was that even though the interiors were lovely the 6 month old demo xc90 had very worn looking seats and the stitches were fraying on the door panels. Car only had 10k km on it.

Sounds like they got everything right so! The last thing anyone would want from a car the size of a 5 series (and bigger) is "Sharp handling". Lets face it, any attempt to make a car of that size a good drivers car never really produces results aside from the negative consequences of crashy ride quality and twitchy steering.

In my opinion the move that the German marques have made (led by BMW) to make their premium large cars "handle" has really spoiled the quality of the product and I'm glad Volvo hasn't followed the pack.

Also, in real life when you actually see them on the road the back does look nice. I think it is just a case of it not photographing well.

The ride was what you'd expect from a large executive saloon - you wouldn't notice that's on 20" wheels from the drivers seat.

I've never noticed the interior trim in Volvo's wearing badly - we've a 7 year old XC60 at home and there's no issues with that, and we've never had one back at work, even with over 200k on it, that looks tired on the inside.

They do have a tendency to have multiple squeaks and rattles though, even when they are not very old. Hopefully the 90 models and anything that comes from now on, will not have those issues.

On a slight tangent R.O.R, have you driven an xc90 with the d4 engine?
Am thinking of one in the future but worry it's too much car for the engine. Have an x5 25d which is quick enough but wouldn't want much slower?
Presume residual on both is about the same?

Dropped an XC90 D4 out to a customer early last year and picked it up a couple of days later. Thought it might be a little underpowered before I drove it, and that the front wheels would be all over the place, but needn't have worried - no issues with the amount of power it had, and the steering was fine.

I did drive one of the old XC90 FWD models - 2.4d with 180 ish horses, and that was terrible to drive. Front wheels wouldn't grip from a standoff and were all over the place when they did eventually find traction. Power was actually enough for the vehicle when it did grip, but by god was it noisy.

Would a Volvo depreciate a lot more than BMW?
I know previously big Volvo's didn't keep their value.

XC90 is kind of out on it's own in that respect - always kept value very well due to high demand. Estate & SUV models tend to hold their value pretty well - won't be worth as much as the equivalent BMW, but cheaper to buy and better standard specification, so the amount lost is roughly the same between them.
