RTE Ranking of Football Counties

Just seen the rankings on the RTE website - what is unbelievable if you think back on the ramblings of Joe Brolly a few short years ago is that Munster is tops with 4 counties in the Top 10 followed by Connacht with 3. Ulster has 2 and Dublin is the only representative of the largest province in the Top 10

The down side of all this as a rebel is that Cork is now 4th in Munster:mad:

Saw that yesterday. I find it difficult to believe Clare and Tipperary will replicate last year's championship runs and justify their positions.

    Same as that.

Tipp have (more than likely) to meet and beat Cork again and Clare got lucky last year that they got the shambles that was Roscommon in round 4.

Tipp really need to get out of division 3 in 2017 even Clare got promoted to div 2 instead of them this year.

The best ranking I have seen is done on here by the Laoisman11

I think Tipp have a decent chance of consolidating next year - I would expect them to get promoted from Division 3 and then off the back of that give Cork a right rattle. It's not like this Tipp team doesn't have any underage pedigree - won All-Ireland minor in 2011, narrowly lost to Tyrone in the U21 final in 2015 [In Munster -they won minor in Munster in 2010 and 2011 and U21 in 2010 and 2015] They also have a very decent manager in Liam Kearns on the sideline and he has shown previously that he knows how to get under-dog teams to challenge the traditional two in Munster. They might be a bit short in terms of squad depth but if things go there way with injuries I can see them being well capable of giving a lot of sides a decent game.

Clare by comparison have far less of an underage predigree and I really wouldn't be surprised to see them struggle in Division 2 and in championship. You could argue that Clare might be due a bit of luck in terms of the draw as being drawn to play Kerry twice in the one year of championship is a bit of a lousy one.

Overall the thing is that beyond the biggest names, a lot of the other teams had very unimpressive seasons, so it's not that shocking that these 2 were so high up the rankings.

In the context of looking forward to 2017 I would agree with the comments on Clare and Tipp however purely on the basis of 2016 I cannot argue with Tipp and Clare being ahead of Cork! We were a shambles - unfortunately if you look at the top 4 once again I can see no change for 2017 - Dublin, Mayo, Kerry and Tyrone - its getting monotonous

Surely Tip have a bit of a run now with a minor and U21 team there to back up the run last year. I don't know but I see a big difference between Tip and Clare.

That is such a bland RTE article- lets not offend anyone type crap!
Clare and Tipp are way too high up the ranking- but sure if they arent in there then we'd prob see some kind of woe is me campaign going on and a local TD would be up in arms.

Teams need to consistently prove their abilit before being top 8/10

Not really, in fact it is quite similar to the rankings that laoisman11 was providing during the summer, which I think most people thought was quite an accurate reflection on things. Comparing both:

    Laoisman11 Rank end 2016 |Team| RTE Ranking
    1 | Dublin | 1
    2 | Kerry | 3
    3 | Mayo | 2
    4 | Tyrone | 4
    5 | Donegal | 6
    6 | Tipperary | 5
    7 | Clare | 8
    8 | Galway | 7
    9 | Cork | 9
    10 | Derry | 12
    11 | Monaghan | 11
    12 | Kildare | 16
    13 | Fermanagh | 14
    14 | Westmeath | 15
    15 | Cavan | 13
    16 | Roscommon | 10
    17 | Meath | 17
    18 | Longford | 18
    19 | Laois | 19
    20 | Offaly | 23
    21 | Sligo | 22
    22 | Armagh | 20
    23 | Down | 21
    24 | Louth | 24
    25 | Wexford | 25
    26 | Limerick | 27
    27 | Antrim | 26
    28 | Carlow | 29
    29 | Leitrim | 28
    30 | Wicklow | 30
    31 | London | 33
    32 | New York | 32
    33 | Waterford | 31

    Farcical

Roscommon got to the Connacht final, brought it to a replay and got to semi final of the Division 1, after finishing second in the league table

Only beat NY by a point.
OK against Sligo after a bad first half
Lost to a team a division below them in the Connacht final.
Lost to a team two divisions below them in the qualifier

Where do you expect them to be ?

Kildare at 12 invalidates any list tbh. Not a top 15 county.

Above Kildare and Westmeath for a start!

Teams get more games in the league and it's a good barometer of their ability

Roscommon are where they deserve to be. The most overrated team out there.

Have to take into account who was doing the overrating. The national media whom were building them up spring time only to knock them down during the summer.

Regardless of another underachieving championship Roscommons league form can't be ignored. They were odds on for relegation before a ball was throw in yet they managed to finish 3rd behind arguably the top two counties Kerry and Dublin.

I'd wonder would their near neighbors Leitrim, longford,Sligo,Offaly have done as well in division one. Another one of their neighbors Westmeath I don't think won any game on their last two visits to division one.

Laoisemans rankings were much better imo.

His are scientific, based on facts and applied via a formula.

Just as the FIFA soccer rankings are.

The RTE ones are opinion based.

Did anyone bother to read the article first or even the title, the rankings are based only on 2016, not over the last few seasons as per Laoisman or not based on prospects for 2017

Roscommon's early season league results flattered them greatly. They had obviously targeted the early rounds of the league as a major focus which their opponents had not. Once the opposition got up to speed fitness-wise in the later rounds Roscommon were found wanting. And their championship form was dismal (though in fairness they were poorly managed and I'd expect better from them this year).

Roscommon teams seem to be mismanaged for a number of years
