Vrt and what are the chances of going down if I wait until January 1st?

    Hi,

I am just wondering if anyone has any experience of paying vrt and if it is more likely to go down in price on 1st January?

I am due to pay vrt on my car and I don't know if I should wait to clear it until the new year but I'm afraid also in case the price goes up.

If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

Wouldn't think a change in rate is likely if not already flagged on Revenue website (which I'm assuming you've looked at already).

The rate won't change but the OMV will definitely go down. But as part of the VRT application, you have to show when you imported the vehicle. I'm not sure whether they'll take the OMV on that date, or the date you attend the NCT centre...

As a general rule the VRT changes when the registration date of the car comes and goes rather than on January 1. The VRT could even potentially increase in the first few weeks of 2017. Also, you would have had 30 days in which to pay the VRT from the date of importation or they can charge a percentage of the VRT for each day over the 30... An invoice, ferry ticket etc serves as proof of import date

Is the VRT not charged as a percentage (dependent on the CO2 emissions) of the OMSP? I'd have thought that the value of cars (ie the open market selling price) goes down each year on Jan 1st?

Of course, we're dealing with Revenue here so common sense goes out the window....

Yep everything out the window is right.... the value might change a bit when the cars registration date passes, but not all cars are registered in January, not to mind January 1st. Revenue realise that's there is a perception (plate snobbery) that a car is a 'year older' on January 1st so they only really change the Omsp depending on the registration date and other factors.

You have to remember also that in the U.K. The 'new reg's come in March and September, so the depending on the reg date of the car the vrt might not change till the middle of the year

Ah..I see...my assumption was based on the fact that a car has horsepower and raceshorses are all considered a year older every 1st January...;-)
