If an item is half price, would you buy one or two of them?

So you're doing the weekly shop, and you see an item from your shopping list on the shelf, something non-perishable you buy regularly, but - sing Hosanna!!- it's half price today! Would you: a) just buy one of them and save the few pennies, or b) buy two (or more) so you can stock up and not have to buy it again for ages? Quick poll today among a few co-workers was split.

Personally, I would buy two or more, if I used it frequently/regularly. If I was prepared to pay full price for it on another day, why not get two-for-one today, so to speak? :)

    To the poll!

Half price items - buy one or more?? 29 votes

    One, because half price!

    Two, because two-for-one!

More than two, because why not!

Depends what it is. Could buy two to freeze one for later consumption/use.

    Depends what it is.

If its 2 packets of Jersey Creams for the price of 1, then yes!

If its 2 bottles of bleach for the price of 1, then fcuk no!

Only if you NEED it, not WANT it.

    So do you need it?

Otherwise the shop has drawn you in to think you either need or want it. They are subtle bstards in the marketing department!!

*silently judges Frosty for his lack of bleach usage* :)

If it's something you use regularly, say toilet paper or baked beans, would that fall into the NEED category? You're going to go looking for it at home one day soon, and realise you need to buy some....in other words, you NEED it....

In my younger days I might have been more able to stick around long enough for more than one half price hand job.

Ha. Have done that in Liverpool.

Me: What bottled beer do you have?
    Barmaid: Carlsberg.
Me: Euurgh! OK, give me three Carlsberg please.
Barmaid: That'll be £3 please. Happy hour.
Me: Eh, I'll have twelve so

I would definitely buy one, thus saving half the price that I might otherwise have paid, and effecting a saving of 50% of the purchase price. Having said that, by buying two of the item in question, i would effectively save 100% of the price of the second (free) item, and my savings would therefore come to twice the amount i had anticipated making by buying just one item.So that's what I'd do.Although, by buying two, I would have actually cancelled out the saving I had planned to make by buying just one item, while at the same increasing the potential saving I might make if the item was on offer at it's original (full) price. Therefore, to avoid confusion, I wouldn't buy anything.Probably.

    47. Maybe 48 if I was feeling flush.

This is why I have to stay away from the Bargain Alerts forum...

    If I buy one I save 50%.

    But if I buy two I save 100% \o/

It very much depends on the item and if I need or have use for a second one. Something like coffee beans, yes I'll take 4. But, window cleaner that lasts me a year, no.

    Definitely depends on the product.

If its something you use regularly not perishable and having extra in the house doesn't lead to extra consumption AND its not an item that is on regular offer, then yes.

Eg, dishwasher tablets of one brand or other are always on offer, as is washing powder, toothpaste, cat food and toilet tissue and various other goods. No advantage to buying double of them.
