We are planning on getting married in late Dec 2017 and are looking for a venue in Galway or an hour or so from there. A lot of guests will travel from Asia so would prefer a location that's easily accessible.
We don't want a soulless hotel ballroom with no character. Any suggestions or ideas?

Brigids garden in roscahil is gorgeous for weddings. Not sure how many guests they can cater for but worth a look. It's less than 30 mins drive from centre of Galway in the clifden direction.

Galway Glamping in Ballyglunin could be nice for a small crowd. Here's their site - http://www.galwayglamping.com

Was at a lovely wedding in Cloonacauneen Castle a while back.

I thought that but it could be risky in December weather.

Lough Cutra Castle or Glenlo Abbey.

+1 for Cloonacauneen. Different options size wise. They have a few rooms/BandB close, but it's only 15 mins in a taxi to town.

Slieve Aughty centre just south of Loughrea is also worth a visit.

If by "alternative" you mean “out of the ordinary” then www.clooncastle.com or even the Rowing Club
But also have a read of these older recommendations
