    Afternoon!

Just curious, if someone works a week in hand and this will receive their pay for the last week on December in Janurary 2016, is that week taxed according to 2016 tax credits or 2017 tax credits?

    2016 , possibly on a week 53 basis

Check your payslips to see the week number that is being paid currently

If they are paid in 2017 the likelihood is that they'll be taxed on 2017 tax credits UNLESS the wages are calculated/administered during 2016 but paid in 2017. (for example, some employees get paid on the first Friday of each month)

I don't think Week 53 applies. This is where there is a 53rd pay day in the year....as is the case for 2016 if you're paid on a Friday or Saturday. What's happening here is that the OP is paid at the end of week 2 for work done in week 1. So, in week 53 he/she would be paid for week 52 and in week 1 of 2017 they will be paid for the last week of 2016 (be that week 52 or 53).
