3 year old Audi A6 - judder from pulling away - DMF recall?

    Hi Folks,
    I have a 2013 Audi A6 177bhp, 5 speed.

I am experiencing judder in the clutch from pulling away in 1st gear.
Started as ireegular/intermittent, but it's been going on for a month, and getting gradually worse.

Researching the usual forums, etc, it seems that there's a high degree of chance that it's the Dual Mass Flywheel.
Thats expensive as a part and for labour.

The car is about 5 months out of it's three year warranty and 84,000kms, and carefully driven.

Does anyone know if this is a known issue, is it the DMF, and is there help which Audi provides on the cost of replacement?

    Thanks
    James

Did you have the car from new?

    Sounds like DMF alright.

A DMF is normally classed as a wear and tear item that has a certain lifespan. DMFs are a bugbear of modern diesel engines and not just problems on one particular brand. 84k km is low enough mileage for a nearly 4 year old diesel car, what sort of driving do you do? Is it a lot of stop/start urban type driving? This type of driving is known to contribute towards increased wear on a flywheel.

Does the car have a full Audi dealer service history? If so it's worth a shot asking them for some goodwill from Audi but given these are wear and tear components you might struggle to anything from them. In that case get the flywheel and clutch changed by a good independant garage for less than a main dealer will charge you.

84k km is piss poor for a dmf from a carefully driven car.
Might not be the issue at all.

I've the same car. I sometime's feel the same thing, usually only on a hill. Are you sure it's actually getting worse, or are you maybe just over thinking the bite point on 1st now that you've noticed it.

I had a DMF go on my A5 before and it was nothing like that, it was rattling when the clutch was depressed, the symptom you are describing wasn't happening at all. At that didn't start until 150K km.

Now you have me worried my DMF is going too....cheers endeval

Sounds like the clutch rather than the flywheel - which tends to be noisy like reported by Silane.

Now, 84k kilometers is relatively low for the clutch to let go; still, if you do a lot of city driving it's not entirely unheard of; Also, what do you mean by "carefully driven"? Last and maybe more important, do you share the car with someone who might be..."riding the clutch" (driving with his/her foot always lightly on the pedal)?

Audi might do some goodwill if it has service history

    First of all, thanks Folks!
It's originally a UK car, imported by Audi Garage and sold as an approved+ car.  I drive 25kms each way to work.
I havent noticed any noise, rattling etc from the DMF.  I've seen some posts about an oil seal leak onto the pressure plates, etc, but not sure how valid that could be.
It has a full UK and Ireland Audi service.

I'm not sure if they can diagnosis it without dropping the clutch?

    thanks, James

After lots of reading forums about this it seems that often times a new clutch/DMF does nothing, and sometimes it goes away for a few thousand miles then starts again, it seems more like a design fault than an actual clutch/DMF failure. Higher revs before pulling away had stopped the problem almost completely for me, so I was just living with it, it wasn't a big deal.

Then yesterday I was doing some work on the car and disconnected the battery and touched the terminals to try to clear a fault. And I've noticed that ever since the judder is completely gone and gear changes in general seem smoother. It's probably all just in my head, but does anybody know if there is any software/electrical component to a gear change on a manual gearbox, I would have thought not, but you never know with cars these days.

The only thing I can think of that could be related is the program that gives the engine a little revs when you activate the clutch. alot of the vw cars have this system. Don't know about your A6.
If it has, I guess it's possible that it is operating a little different after a reset.
Still grasping at straws thought tbh.

Same here. I have a 2011 new shape Sline A6 and have similar issues...... I thought it was the front wheels skidding as that's what it feels like and then though sh1t I hope it's not the clutch going as I only have the car less than 6 months....

I think it's driving style as my own car is Auto plus herself always gives me a disapproving look when it happens, by God her next car will be Auto!

It can be fixed by driving style, keeping the revs high sorts it, but the odd time you want to slowly inch a bit forward it leaves you looking a learner with the car juddering forward.

You would know by the noise coming from the engine bay if it was the DMF in fairness, it sounds like you have a bag of spanners hopping around in there.

    The joys of a TDI!

Apparently they're starting to put them in some petrols now too, because they were such a big hit with TDI drivers.

But the problem here isn't the DMF, people have replaced them and nothing changes, something else is causing the judder.

Try turning traction control off and see if that makes any difference.

I had simuluar enough on a older diesel Passat. Thought it was the flywheel giving up but in the end it was the inner cv joint.

I mentioned this to Audi during routine service and when they drove it the clutch did judder, they took the car in and removed the gearbox to inspect everything. It turned out to be a faulty clutch disc which was replaced under warranty.

Fantastic service from Audi Cork plus they gave me a new A6 whilst the work was carried out.

How old is your Audi and what kind of mileage is there on it?

Hmmm mine is 6 years old with over 200k kms on clock with full Audi Service History. I only drive it the odd time. My wife is the main driver. I notice it only happens on a cold start......

If you go to the Audi Forums it seems a common issue with the A6 I have an automatic with 20k and have had any issue like that.
