Choosing a Christmas Ham

    Hi all,

    I was looking at the hams my local Aldi had available yesterday and I noticed they were offering both "Horsehoe" hams and "Gammon" hams.

    We are a family of 4 adults and will have 2 guests for Christmas lunch plus we like having ham for a few days after for sandwiches etc so usually go for a 4kg fillet of ham but I'm a bit confused whether I should be looking for Horsehoe or Gammon? :o

    Gammon is strictly cuts from the back leg, horseshoe is the cut taken from the middle part of this. So technically it should be the most tender/succulent but I never found much difference between either.

    Have had both over the years. Never noticed much difference.
    Just make sure you soak them in fresh water for 24 hours to get the excess salt out. Change the water frequently.

    Modern hams aren't half as salty as hams used to be. I don't find it necessary to soak them if it is being boiled. If roasting, I would soak.

    Thanks all,

    I'll either boil it in cider (or Coke), apply a store bought glaze and then bake for 20 minutes or I might follow this recipe which looks interesting.
