I got a phonecall from HR today and got a telling off for enquiring about a product gone out of stock.
I work for a well known hot beverage selling company and they got this product in for Christmas time. It ran out of stock a couple of weeks later and whenever I asked my manager when it would be coming back, they never knew when it would be back in. A lot of customers were asking after it and I was personally fond of it myself at the time, so about 6 weeks ago I sent a private message via facebook to the facebook page of the company. I didnt state that I was an employee. I was just asking as if I were a customer. I was told it would be coming back in, no problem I thought....
Today I got a phonecall.from HR of my company. They are based in a different part of the country so never had to deal with HR before. I was told it was in my contract that I was not allowed to post on social media in a way that could portray the company in a negative way. I told them that I didnt post it publicly and that I did it via private message therefore no one could see it besides me and the person behind the facebook page. They wouldnt accept this and I told them I wasnt accepting this as I felt they were wrong and that I felt I didnt breach anything. A few colleagues and my own managers all read my contract and all agreed that I had not broken any rules by posting a query privately.
My manager advised me to wait a day or two before I decide to do anything. Should I email HR back and point out that I was not in the wrong? Seeking legal advice was also suggested to me.

A few days ago I approached my manager about my assistant manager being a victim of bullying (exclusion, not being shown dignity and respect in front of customers and other staff) but my manager didnt want to know anything about it, which is always the case, my manager just doesnt want to know anything bad going on and has her head stuck in the sand.

Do you have a problem with your employer?

You could still be in a union.

Start thinking how much you like your job..

If you go back poking the wasps nest with a stick all sorts can happen.. Its not that hard to legally get rid of near any employee and stay within employment law..

You got a telling off, no verbal warning or anything formal.. TBH if I were your manager I'd be telling you to man up and speak directly to the company rather than posing as a potential punter..

My advice is let it slide, put it behind you and move on.. You really going to risk your relationship with the employer over a hot drink ??

Yeah I get what you mean. But its not totally about the drink. Its the fact I used my own facebook page to privately message the facebook page of the company an innocent question and never stated I was an employee. It was my own business who i messaged privately and no member of the public could see it so how could I be portraying the company in a bad light? I still think she had no right to tell me off for that

How did they know you work for them was it simple they checked or did some one put you in it.If it just they found out them self's then I'd leave it ,you will have bigger battles but if someone hung ya out to dry then,I'd prob kick the nest.

Don't be overthinking this. On the scheme of a career it's nothing. I'd consider it odd you messaged them privately and if I were in HR I could wonder were you being facetious in some way. As an employee why wouldn't you openly enquire ?

    Let it roll.

Yeah your right. Ive slept on it and am moving on from it. I can understand your point of view, why would an employee private message the companys facebook? Because my manager would not tell me and I thought I would have more luck dropping them a message...
