As it's the Motors forum, I'm sure we all believe we are very competent drivers and wouldn't dare do a tap wrong.

    Or would we?

Do you have any bad habits or have you done something today or recently that you were ashamed / annoyed of and wished you didn't do it?

I'll start... Was driving through the city the other day when car in front were very slow and not progressing when they had right of way.
I gave them a good flash of my lights and I got agitated, but it was clear they were just an elderly couple probably nervous going through town.
The second I did it, I regretted it. I wasn't in a rush, but the dickhead in me that sometimes comes out when I'm behind the wheel got inpatient and may have made damaged that old man's confidence, along with getting me worked up.
It could have been my Mum or Dad, and I'd never want them to lose their confidence driving.

Anyway, feel free to share your driving sins and please don't reply / comment on posts... let us all get those moments off our chest and perhaps see where each other tend to be ashamed of various actions in our vehicles.

I am currently on a mission to see exactly how dirty I can let the outside of the 'Rolla van go before washing it.

The answer so far is very, very dirty.

My patience for muppetry and dawdlers is very limited. I don't indulge the former and have no problem flashing lights at the latter if they haven't moved in say 10/15 seconds when there's plenty of time/room to do so. This is especially true on motorways.

I don't pay much attention to speed limits, preferring to drive according to the conditions of the road, traffic volume, weather/visibility etc than some arbitrary sign.

I like to hog the over taking lane and watch the driver behind me get all stressed out. Yeah i know im a bad boy.

For myself, made a stupid error last week, attemped to take a right turn on a road thinking the traffic coming the opposite way still had a red light (car didnt move) turns out the car didnt move because he stalled and when he got going I was already half way to making the turn. So I got a few beeps could of caused an incident, would of been nothing serious as its only a small road and speed is not an issue.

Felt like an idiot then. Thought me lesson I suppose.

Its sort of an awkward road and does give you the impression that the lights would work better if each side got a green at seperate times rather then both green lights together, because the cars coming from the opposite side have to turn right or left they can't go straight, and the from my side its the same we have to turn right or left. So it creates a sort of choke in the middle. Be better of letting each side go one at a time. But still my fault lesson learned xD

nul point actually :) And to be fair in my experience unless you're taking the complete piss or being stupid, they'll leave you alone.

I'm sure it must drive them mad sometimes when every car around them drops to 20 below the limit just because they see the squad car.

Oh my god, this thread just reminded me. Yesterday I was emerging and turning right on a junction after climbing a very steep hill. An An Post van flashed me to go and just as I was carefully coming around that, a crazy maniac middle aged woman comes helter-skelter out from behind him to overtake. Luckily I was going very cautiously and was able to stop in good time.

But then she just sat there. I couldn't turn into my lane because she was blocking it and the An Post van couldn't go because I was obstructing him. In the end I just had to reverse incredibly cautiously back down the hill the for her to burn past me.

Some people should just be euthanised.

    This :)

There is a speed trap on my way to work with speed limit of 80. All of them slow down to 60 ( probably 50-55 given the speedo inaccuracy).

I overtook Gardai cars couple of times on a motorway doing 120 - 130 while the rest was following them like a sheep at 100 km/h :)

Confession? I drive over the speed limit from time to time. Not going to tell more ;)

Other than that I'm perfect with perfectly clean driving license :)

Forgive me motoring father for I have sinned. It has been three months since my last car related confession. My committed sins include:

Blocking the only available fuel pump at a local filling station, I pretended I couldn't decide between a snickers or a Mars. But on the inside my ribs were in pain with laughter, when I seen the person rubbing there face with anger

Also father I rest my hand on the horn at traffic lights and beep the exact second the lights turn green..

Prius hit my vehicle and damaged her car very funny so it was as she had tried to make me hit her mirror. That didn't work so she then turned full lock and drove straight into rear wheels.

I sometimes hog the lanes of a roundabout the length of the car...

    - There are several smaller roundabouts I use where I sit between both lanes at the entrance rather than risk being squeezed/sideswiped by someone.

    - I despise under-taking and lane weavers and take great pleasure in boxing them in rather than letting them try to force their way in front of me

Pulled out from junction thinking I had loads of time. But was closer than I thought so pulled a nice Tyre spinning drift in front of a confused Octavia driver trying to hurry up but getting nothing but wheelspin.

Wasn't that close as 3-4 car lengths but still.

When I'm going somewhere I tend to like getting there without dawdling along. My pet hate, is the outside lane people on the M50/M70/M4 you name it.

I work on the continent most weeks and when you get used to driving over there, coming back to dublin is such a chore.

Unless you are overtaking move out of the outside lane. Even if I am doing 140km/h* in the outside lane while overtaking and someone comes up behind me even faster I always let them past.

Because I know if I was in a hurry for whatever reason I'd appreciate someone doing the same.

Tax smax, got aaages out of a carina II without a sniff of it - stopped at a checkpoint on the quays in Dublin by a young garda on a bicycle -

    'Where's the tax?'

    "oh she's exempt, guard"

    'Right-o, move on so'

Cue my disbelief and moving off while trying to hold in the laughter...

Unfortunately my balls have become less brassy as I grow up a little, so now I pay the tariffs, but it's nice not to be paranoid driving around the place.

Was in a bit of a hurry out of town one day so I had to pass a learner driver at a fair pace. Not far up the road I had to pull in at a house to drop off someone, I turned off the lights so as not to draw attention. While this was happening the L driver cruised by so inevitably I had to pass him again.

When I see pedestrians crossing the road in front of me (no pedestrian crossing/lights) in that casual "you'll just have to slow down, no way you'll dare hit me" saunter I speed up and make them do that "I need to use the toilet" walk/run.

I over-take cyclists as close as possible, I'm not happy unless my wing-mirror is a c*nt hair away from their handle-bars.

I block taxi's at every opportunity, never let them in.

My commute to work is over 600 miles a week. (Lot of driving)

This drive includes 20 mins on a national road, up the m9 and m/n7. The n7 is mental at Naas, but I've gotten used to the queues.

Generally, the worst part of this drive is the 20 mins on the N80 every evening. Most days I come across someone driving at 40-45 MPH. I probably shouldn't, but I drive right up their backside until I get a chance to pass out. There is literally no reason (in my mind) to drive this slowly. I wish I could just sit patiently behind them but my god it grinds my gears.

Something that I really regret doing recently- was on the N7 in right lane. Going 110km. Car behind was driving close to me. (Obviously in a hurry). As soon as I got past the car I was overtaking, car behind started flashing. I was annoyed as I was going to pull across then to middle lane when I could see that I could safely get in. I stayed in right lane for a few extra seconds just to annoy the other car, changed lane, rolled down window, and as car drove past, a particular finger was lifted.

Should have stopped here, but onto the M7 I followed behind the car. (Put the foot down to keep up). As soon as she got stuck behind someone in overtaking lane I childishly started flashing my lights.

When I got onto the M9 I thought about what had happened and regretted my actions.

This thread is a great idea!

Cannot tell if doing a bad job of sarcasm. You are really uptight if somebody even joking about it makes you reflexively call them "sick".

Everyone was driving around Cork city at weirdly slow speeds tonight. Looking for parking, maybe? Anyway, I was lane-hopping all over MacCurtain St. to avoid them, that's my confession.

Finally caught by the Traffic Corps, as no tax on the Passat since March. Ordered to back tax it and show prfoof to my local station, or he promised to take me to court and add points.
. Deliberately used cheque book from a closed account, got disk, presented it and Guard photocopied it and noted my attedndance, etc.
When cheque came back after ten days, returned disk, changed car to wife's name and taxed from that date.:o

If you sit in traffic with your foot on the brake dazzling me behind you I might put my full beams on and make sure you can see them in your mirror.

And I'm guilty of doing the same on the motorway to someone who's in the way.

In the evenings, where the M50 merges with the M11 southbound after Loughlinstown, I like to see how many cars I can allow to merge in front of me before the people behind start getting impatient. I let nine through once.
