What is the average price that a plumber would usually charge to replace a burner in an oil boiler? Is it considered a big job?

No, it's not his job. He has no training or the equipment to check its efficiency.
Job for a Boiler Maintenance Technician.
Same person to service it annually.

What make of boiler? What has happened that whole burner needs replacing.

For me, I wouldn't just replace a burner and walk. I would need to service boiler and commission new burner. Otherwise there could be lots of call backs.

Apologies, he is a qualified technician and has his own company. My bad.

It won't fire up. Photocell had been replaced and its been serviced but no dice. Was advised to replace burner. I've sourced a second hand one as I intend to upgrade our heating system soon. I just need someone to install it and hopefully it sees us thru the winter until we upgrade this summer hopefully. We receive what I thought was a pretty high quote so was wondering if this would be considered a big job. It's a Firebird super q 90/120.

Most plumbers won't go near a boiler. It has it's own specific training course.
    Stop being rude.
Neither of these then install a stove.

There is something wrong with it that hasn't been identified. I wonder how good your plumber is on diognosis of burner problems.
Burner outputs and burner heads (a part of the burner that varies between boilers). I would have to check if your burner is correct one.
Ball park (assuming correct burner) including service would be about €130/140 with no gaurantees and charges for any call backs.

Local guy, call out is €60, obviously plus any parts.

A few lads here seem to favour, the jack of all trades, for this type of job.

MOD: if your trolling I will ban you

What you need here is a second opinion,i have no doubt your plumber is excellent but diagnosing burner faults may not be his speciality.I would say your burner would not have to be changed,it could be quite easy to fix with the correct equipment.

Thanks. I've had three different service techs out looking at it. My regular boiler service man, another who is going to do my heating upgrade and another tech just to make sure. Hopefully the burner I got is compatible.

changing a photo cell to replacing a burner is a huge step.

you have had a few guys looking at it have any of them told you why you need to replace the burner.

im not saying it doesnt need to be replaced but you need to be told why. not being told is like going to a garage and them saying you need a new car but not giving you the reason.

even if a few parts are faulty it would be more cost effective than replacing, and with second hand items, the one you get can often be older/have more wear than your original.

before you fit another burner you will need to see if
    the model is compatible
    the blast tube is right
    the fan size is right
the pump is set for 1 or 2 pipe system
    the flange is compatable

you will need the correct setup data for the burner to your boiler
    nozzle type, angle and size
    oil pressure
    air setting
    blast tube setting if adjustable

once all the above is sorted it will need
    pump condition checked
    filter cleaned
    capicator checked
    a new nozzle
    then general inspection

    then set to correct settings
    fit fire up
    then fga and adjustment

Any "service man" who cannot tell a client what is actually wrong and the options on repair price oppose to replacement costs leaves me wondering ?
Obviously the 3 wise men were still busy this time of year

    Note.
How to spot a wise man.
They have a sense of humour and know what their talking about.
    Definitely 3 here :)

Thank you all. Ye were right about not really having to replace the burner. It was an issue with the pump not letting the kerosene thru or something like that. The cost to replace that would have been almost what I paid for the refurbished burner. Tech was in agreement that burner didn't need to be replaced so he is a keeper. Thanks again all for your input. Really appreciated it.
