What percentage of people actually buy presents for their family/friends, outside of partners and children? How much would be reasonable to spend on a present for a brother that would NOT be seen as being miserably cheap?

A similar amount to that spent by said brother on your gift.

This stuff ain't complicated. Phone him, agree a sum, and crack on!

We generally try and get something each other would like within reason.
We'd never really have a set amount. So ie if we knew sibling A was having a difficult time we'd spend a little extra on them on something they'd like even if we knew there present wouldn't be as expensive but they'd put a lot of taught into it.
