Any sign of a full lifting? The brother in law has been offered a permanent clerical officer contract on half hours. This will automatically become full hours permanent when the moratorium is lifted. Thing is he has a full hours temporary contract and is not sure whether to stick or twist. I think he should take it as it is a half hour less commute each way. What do all on here think?

Hi Grueller. I was under the impression that the moratorium is lifted at this stage, at least to a decent extent, given the amount of competitions for civil servants of the different grades from Clerical Officer up to Assistant Principal Officer. I was able to get a full time Executive Officer myself about four months back, after having been on a temporary clerical officer contract for about 18 months before that.

What he could do is quiz them a bit further about the moratorium. It might be just related to staffing levels in a particular office/department/public sector body which is overstaffed in some places, but where there is a vacancy to take him in. I'd be of similar mind to yourself about the job; if he can afford the cut in wages for the moment (depends on where he's living), it might be no harm to take the permanent job over the temporary one which could go at any stage. The fact that it would have a five hour per week shorter commute (when working full time hours) would also be a great time and money saver. You could also factor in the cost of having to change a car more often when commuting further (if not using public transport) as another money saver.

I think he really needs to crunch numbers here, half time wages of a Clerical Officer at point one of the salary scale is a low wage.

I don't think anyone can guarantee him that he will get full hours. If they get sanction for another half time post, they may use it elsewhere, and it could be open to at least internal competition.

If he can meet his financial obligations and afford to live on the half salary, it's probably worth the risk.
