I have sync'ed my new phoone to laptop and transferred about 2,000 photos. When phone was connected to laptop, they were all visible. Since disconnecting phone, they have gone. I was expecting a prompt about maybe saving them etc, but just the option to upload. How do I actually save them?? I usually use a camera so not used to using the camera phone as extensively but this phone has a really good camera and seems to be the camera of convenience now.

    Is it Android?

You could use Google Photos on the phone, which will sync automatically with your Google Drive over wireless and if you have google drive on your laptop, then through the magic of the aether, they will sync with that. All this happens in the background.

iThings do something similar, but I can't give you any guidance on how that works.

Are they no longer visible on the phone or the laptop?
FWIW I always use the old method of copy and paste from the folder on the phone to the destination folder on the laptop/PC. Old-fashioned I know but I know for sure then if stuff has copied over properly.

TBH that sounds like you were just looking at them in a window showing the contents of the phones memory then when you disconnected they disappeared like any file on an external drive would when you disconnect it.

Reconnect the phone and try highlighting all the pics with CTRL and A, then right click and copy them, navigate to where you keep your pics on the pc, then right click and paste to create copies of them on your pc.
