Out of interest, if you tried to import such a weapon and it was seized by customs, what sort of punishment would you be facing?

    Asking for a friend.

It was covered on the Customs TV show. Gardai and customs agents obtained a search warrant and removed any other weapons from the house.

    Here you go.
    http://www.justice.ie/en/JELR/Pages/FAQ

    What are Offensive Weapons?
Offensive weapons include flick-knives, knuckledusters, swordsticks, sword umbrellas, hand and foot claws, belt buckle knives, pushdaggers, hollow kubotans, shurikens, butterfly knives, telescopic truncheons, blowpipes, kusari gama, kyoketsu shoge, manrikigusari, sap gloves, and machetes.

Katanas or 'samurai swords' were added with effect from 1 September 2009, though there are exceptions to the ban designed for collectors and martial artists. You can read the full text of the 1991 Order on offensive weapons here. and the 2009 amendment to it here.

The Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act 1990. prohibits the manufacture, importation, sale, hire or loan of offensive weapons and penalties of up to seven years imprisonment can apply.

Sad we're not allowed defend ourselves in this country.

A heavy duty torch might be the way to go.

It is without doubt!, a good friend of my missus was raped 2 years ago, could have been avoided if she had a pocket stun gun.. ( highly illegal and personally wouldn't touch one)

Us men (obviously) have some kind of a better chance in general.
But I do have concern for my missus when she heads out with pal's into town.
She is a black belt Kenpo, that will only get her so far..

Hard to beat a good baseball bat with a 3 or 4 oz lead insert.

Or maybe even batter a real gun...In Germany you can carry pepper spray, for use only on dangerous animals you see ;)

I'm looking into a tactical flashlight. Blind your assistant and then crack him over the head.

Personally I just place my keys between each knuckle if in a bad area or feel a threat. Thank foo*ok I've never had to use them. I use to box and still have speed, but not everyone does. It's the ladies I'd be thinking more about.

Women aren't as soft as you're trying to portray them to be.

    Size matters in a fight.

The problem is, as any Guard will tell you, most of this stuff is bought and fawned over by amateur wanna be thugs (who incidentally all use the self defence excuse for having it) and not used by "ordinary people defending themselves"
