    Hi Guys,

A question about insulation. My mum lives at home alone and has recently got a bad lung infection. We have a very good heating system in the house, and it is very small (only two bedrooms) but it's always very cold. My question is, is insulation worth the price or is there some other way at insulating the house I should be looking at and if insulation is required, how is a price usually arrived at?

    Thanks.

There's different types of insulation with different costs.
The least effective way & imo a waste of time is pumping insulation into cavity blocks.
Insulating the inside of the house is effective but rads, sockets need moving & you loose inches from the size of the rooms.
If there is a cavity in the wall itself this can be filled with insulation. This is effective.
You can clad the outside of the house in insulation. Again effective but expensive.
Grants are available for insulation from sei.

If she qualifies, (for instance, if she owns the house and gets the fuel allowance), your mum might be eligible for the Warmer Homes scheme: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/housing/housing_grants_and_schemes/warmer_homes_scheme.html

She'd get the insulation done for free.
