    Hi,

I'm looking at a Kia Sportage 132 the dealer has brought in from over in England, it has no plates on it yet, I was told by the dealer that it doesn't need a NCT until Oct 2017 as it was registered Oct 13, my insurance company says otherwise that is does within 21 days of plates been got, can anyone let me know if this is the case.

Also, when i looking into the engine the main part was perfect but i have seen some rust on a pipe at the bottom of the engine near the ground part, is this something i should be concerned about.

    Any help very much appreciated.

The car is due it's first NCT on the 4th anniversary of it's first original registration which in this case should be Oct 2017. If the insurance call centre is telling you differently then ask them to put you through to a supervisor to reconfirm and if they confirm this then get it in writing as that would contradict what the NCT and RSA state on their websites.

The rust issue could be just normal surface rust on metal parts exposed to the elements but it's hard to tell from just a description. Maybe go look at a similar car for comparison.

    Hi Bazz26,

The insurance company told me that the MOT of England doesn't cover by law here in Ireland that the NCT is the only one does it depend on the year of the vehicle?

Yes. The insurance company agent hasn't a clue what she is talking about. NCT is only needed on 4th anniversary, no matter where the car came from, with, or without a DOE. Ignore the call previously made and phone another agent.

Yes a MOT is a UK roadworthy test that has no bearing in Ireland so ignore that part. However a October 2013 car does not need a NCT until it's 4th birthday which is October 2017 in the case of this Kia. Your insurance company has that bit wrong.

    And just to summarize:

In the UK a car has it's first MOT at 3 years old.
In Ireland a car has it's first NCT at 4 years old.

So a 3 year old car imported from the UK with a MOT does not need a NCT until it is 4 years old.

The 21 days bit makes me think the insurance agent is thinking of VRT....

Rust is normal on an import. They use salt on the roads in the uk.

Thanks JJJJNR, is it ok to buy a car with this rust, will it get worse?

    Hi,

Looking at buying a kia sportage 2013, dealer got in UK. Seen some rust on pipe at bottom of engine. Should I be concerned about this. The dealer said all cars are coated now against rust in cars from UK? Thanks

Without pics it's hard to guess, but it's not uncommon with some surface rust on some engine parts.
The dealer warranty will probably not include any rust, but you can ask them to sand and protect the pipe. Or you can do it yourself.

Have a look at a same year car for sale to see if it's also rusted, could be normal.

"Pipe at bottom of engine" is a bit nonspecific..

You already have a thread open asking the same question and getting plenty of answers, why did you start another one?

no it'll get better with age.

Of course it'll get worse, thats how rust works.

Without knowing what is rusting, its impossible to tell you if it'll cause trouble down the line.

Because none one answered much on my other one thought this a better one to put on. It's not interfering with anyone. Thanks to the other who answered as I am concerned 😊

But your question isnt answerable with the lack of information you've given. You've been asked for more information, and so far haven't given us anything.

It is normal for surface rust to appear on pipes that are exposed to the elements. Rotting rust is a different matter. You'd want to get the car up on a ramp and examine it from underneath to see what kind of rust it is. I'd be very surprised if it was anything more than surface rust on such a newish car.

I reckon many people have had good experiences with imports but the one I bought about ten years ago was nothing but trouble. It was a little cheaper but not worth the hassle. Also when I went to resell it, there was more hassle and more raised eye brows. I felt I had to continually be making excuses for it.
