VW Passat electric handbrake repair

2009 Passat has been having a handbrake fault for a while. Doesn't happen all the time but is happening more and more frequently.

i.e. when I press the button to engage the brake it doesn't work and the warning light on the dash comes on with beeping. It works after a few goes but means I'm fiddling with putting in the key, taking it back out to reset the fault etc....

Any idea of the cost to have it repaired/replaced and any recommendations in Dublin/Kildare areas to have it done?

    Thanks!

It's often the button itself, the buttons aren't very expensive, around €60 plus fitting.

I'd stop using it in the meantime if possible as well. I had this happen on my old Passat and almost got stranded twice because it refused to disengage initially so in the end I just put some black tape over the button to stop me instinctively pressing it. Probably easier in my case though as the car was an auto and putting it in P(ark) locks the transmission anyway so it wasn't gonna go anywhere without the handbrake.

As for the fault.. it could be the switch but if it's one of the calipers (as it was in my case) it'll cost a few hundred to sort. As you said Dublin/Kildare I'd recommend driving the extra 20 mins to Portlaoise and getting George Dalton (posts on this forum as well and used by myself and others here) to take a look :)

I had same problem on 07 highline, had problems.Handbrake wouldn't go on then wouldn't release, then fine for months.eventually refused to go on and changed switch to a motorfactors one for €35 and got a m8 to reset faults. worked for awhile and failed again. so replaced switch with VW version and also one caliper all good now. Not worth messing around without handbrake you will eventually run into a problem

    .
If it's just the button buy one of these http://m.ebay.ie/itm/VW-Passat-B6-2005-2011-Electric-Parking-Hand-Brake-Switch-Button-3C0927225C-/262742162893?nav=SEARCH . A cinch to swap them, YouTube video on how to do it. .. I've an 08 and have replaced the button twice . Although when I drove around the corner and driver's door swing open after ignoring a persistent door locking problem, I got a mechanic to do that.... Fun times. YouTube video here. https://youtu.be/mElOwCUUv9Y

    fun times indeed :)
just a side issue should anyone come across it I noticed a buzzing noise from the boot area even with the car locked. eventually discovered the there was a relay ? (i forget the name of it ) in the boot behind the RHS quarter panel, this usually buzzes when turning left ,right etc when a trailer is connected unfortunately this was sitting in a puddle of water so I dried it out and the sweet sound of silence came back. just a little bit of info.

buy a genuine button if thats your issue there very cheap and they seem to be lot more reliable than the aftermarket ones
