    Hi All

I have a Riello boiler which is not firing.

Bought house 1 year ago and guessing the oil boiler installation is approx 10 years old. I do not know if it was serviced at all in that time. I have reset the boiler, and reset the stat. No joy- Looking for any input/help

It's been slow firing for the last while but would always fire eventually, today no dice at all

Did it run out of oil by any chance ?
    Did you try bleeding it
or perhaps try cleaning the photocell

how do you mean the burner was slow firing...,Did you have to press the reset button to get it to fire previously

Odds are, photocell, clean it. It needs a service so get a maintnenance guy to it.

Over aired. Dirty electrodes. Dirty nozzle/filter. Incorrect pump pressure. Photo cell. Contaminated oil.
    Take your pick.

if you mean by slow firing you get a low hum from the boiler then I would guess and I mean guess

capacitor maybe the first thing to be ruled out

possibly photocell but you really need somebody to check over the whole installation

lots of issues going on combustion leaks etc

The video tells me your boiler is in dire need of a service and repair.
You need a new frost stat before it goes on fire and it should be relocated in a different position, new oil hoses, new automatic air vent, new gaskets and a service.
The tigerloop is a external tigerloop and should really be outside the boiler casing. It may effect combustion readings.
The pressure relief valve should be plumbed away from the electrics.

Its hard to tell from the video but is there a slight bit of water coming from the pressure relief valve down on top of the thermostat.
At a guess, i have a feeling you have no power going to your boiler,id be checking the 5 amp fuse at spur switch or trip switch in fuse board. If so the source of the problem has to be repaired first

i would say it is the photo cell, and judging by the smuts around the burner securing bolt i would guess its black. (could also be control box)
cleaning it would most likely get you running but all this would do is soot the boiler up more , it really needs a service and the other issues addressed by the service tech.

it is dirty because the burner isnt burning correctly.
i know you need to use it at the moment but get it serviced as soon as you can the more it runs like that the higher the chances of it breaking down, causing damage to the boiler, costing you more to get serviced, and it is burning more oil than it should so it is costing you money too

I'm having a similar problem with my boiler. I had a plumber out and after fitting new hoses etc he states I need an electrician, as it looks like power is not getting through to fire it. I've phoned a few electricians but none can come before Christmas. Can anyone recommend an electrician in Galway city who might help a freezing damsel in distress ASAP? You can PM me it's not allowed to give names on here.

Does anything happen when you turn the boiler on.
Is there a name, make model or anything on the boiler

    It's a Grant Module 50/70.
When you turn it on you can hear the motor but it's not cutting in as not firing up.
I've been away so it hasn't been on since last March.
The oil had run out and the oil man offered to bleed it for me in case of an air lock. After he had a look he said the oil was getting through but that something was wrong.
I called a plumber and he still couldn't get it working as he stated it was the electrics and I needed an electrician to see where the disconnect was.
I'm quite happy to pay an electrician but getting one to call out is the problem!

If the motor is running it is getting power, not an electrical fault
Does the motor just keep running or does it stop and the red light come on

You need a Boiler Services Engineer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 871 ✭✭✭TPM

    Does it look like this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5 BrigidH

Yes, it looks exactly like that!
I think it's working!! The guy didn't leave it run for long enough. I was waiting for the red light to come on and it just seemed to start.

I'll still get a Boiler Services Engineer to look at it though just to be on the safe side....if I can get one to come out that is!

Thank you so much for you help everyone. Happy Christmas to you all.

Glad to hear it is firing up for you.
You will find it hard to get someone to come and look at it but I would keep trying because it would be harder to get them out over Christmas if it gives trouble.
It might be worth to keep looking for someone on here to
