Scratches on windshield from old wipers

Recently got a Prius from the North, and you know how it is.. In the beginning it's all shiny and quiet and refined, but as soon as you get used to the new environment, little imperfections stand out.

So, there are very shallow scratches on my windshield (nail doesn't catch them). They are curved - following wiper blade's path and probably they have been caused by old worn-out/crappy wipers.

Tried steel wool 0000 on a patch last night, but no difference at all. Any ideas/suggestions how to get rid of them?

Your insurance probably has windscreen cover that will cover it. Might be possible to buff them out/fill them whatever they do, or it might need the windscreen to be replaced. It'll be free.

Wasn't aware that they also cover this kind of "minor" elements! That's great!!

It is possible to polish glass - but its not an easy process.

Where are you located Yanisk? If in Dublin I'd hazard a guess that Elite Auto Clean will be able to use cerium oxide to polish the scratches out.

I had the same thing on my last car. I used cerium oxide, a rayon pad and a dual action polisher and it removed them after spending a bit of time on it. If you go down this route though it will remove the screen's beading ability and rainwater will sheet on it. A glass coating such as Gtechniq G1 or CarPro FlyBy Forte would be needed but everyone should have their screens coated in that anyway.

Didn't do anything with the windshield yet, as I mainly get pissed off when driving in the wet and it didn't happen more that 2-3 times since.

I'm thinking about the insurance part, but I've got a question before I give them a ring. When getting quotes, most of the insurers have a specific question about windshield claims - so does this affect the premium in any way? I guess a replacement would be at least 700-800..

700-800! More like 200. Give Autoglass a call and they'll give you a quote in 5 mins.

By the way, if you disclose to your insurance company that the scratches in the windscreen were present when you bought the car, it's highly unlikely that they'll cover the cost of repair as it was a pre-existing condition when you bought it.

They won't cover scratches just breakages... Had same with my car last year.. Also polishing out is near impossible.. Autoclean tried for hours... Eventually my screen was replaced when it broke accidentally

We had a windscreen replaced that was scratched from wipers. Last summer. No breakage, just scratches.

You will have to tell any insurance co. that you "had a claim" although it should not affect you policy premium,
When getting quote it asks " any claims in the last 5 years including windscreen claims" so they need to know for some reason,
You can always answer "No" but it just gives them a reason not to pay out if you have a big claim.
I claimed a windscreen about 3 years ago and it's down on the policy documents as a "claim" but I don't think it is affecting the premium.
