Return of stolen goods after a break in

    Hypothetical question

My car gets broken into, my phone, wallet and gym bag are all taken along with bank cards, the lot. The side window was smashed and everything was taken in the space of 30 minutes I was away.

I call the guards, who by pure chance happen to be alerted to an incident where some people dump what appears to be my gym bag out the window of a car as they approach a random garda checkpoint in the next town over.

They put 2+2 together and apprehend the suspects with my belongings (bag, wallet and a large sum of cash belonging to my daughter that was in her own wallet in preparation of a shopping trip the following day.)

I accurately describe my belongings to the gardai who in turn confirm its my stuff.

Not everything is recovered however, a work phone is still missing, every document that was in my bag is gone and more than likely thrown out the window.

The guards are amazing in the immediate aftermath. However, in the weeks that follow, they are harder and harder to get hold of. I'm told that I can have my stuff back, followed by another wait. One guard cannot get hold of the other etc.... What is the procedure for getting stolen goods returned?

It could be months before theres a court case, will my daughters money be tied up until then? Will I get my phone back before then aswell as my other belongings? The guards seem to be putting me on the long finger. if I have to wait id appreciate if they could say such, but its the not knowing whats happening thats bugging.

Hypothetically speaking of course, what is the procedure for the return of stolen goods?

I never fail to be amazed at the level of detail people supply in these completely hypothetical situations

Hypothetically, you can write to the relevant Garda and in the absence of a response from him, a letter to the Superintendent may elicit the appropriate response.

Failing all of that, see here.
