Does it make it last longer or would plastic do the same job?

it will heat a lot more under plastic than under straw. easier to pull off plastic though, you could just pull plastic over the heap when there is a frost coming and strip it back when frost is gone.

The father used to cover his beet with rushes that he baled/saved during the summer

Whats the actual real advantage of covering with straw?

    Prevents from frost damage.

The only reason to cover is to prevent frost damage. Have beer covers here but stopped using them instead using straw blower to cover the heap. Loaded straw and all into the chopper
