I just got this in the post.As I try to connect it to the back of the TV it seems to me that the connection is different from what I was expecting.

Instead of pushing it into the TV as it the case with terrestrial aerials I have to screw it in somewhere as is the case for a satellite aerial.

It came from China (ebay) . Is that just how they connect all televisions over there?

Should I just cut off the connector and replace it with a terrestrial connector -or is there such a thing as an adapter that I might be better off using?

EDIT:it only cost 2.5 € so I will butcher it if needs be but I wonder what the story is.

You might find a standard connector won't work because the cable is thinner than normal and it won't grip.
Dealz sells a kit of bits and bobs that includes the connector you need. It screws onto the wires as opposed to the normal type. I'd say that will do what you want.

Any wha probably won't work either way :)

    One of these.

    They are called F-connectors

I don't know about China itself but in many places outside Europe, including North America, F-connectors are used for terrestrial input on TVs (as well as satellite) instead of the 'push-on' (Belling-Lee) type we use.

Why did you buy that crap? Rabbits ears are generally VHF aerials for FM or DAB radio not UHF TV. Though I note that one has an additional UHF loop as well. But seriously you would have been better off going to a Euro shop and getting one with the right connector as well.

It only cost 2.50€ including postage.I ended up cutting off the end and fitting a terrestrial connector.

No it is not as good as a proper aerial but it serves a purpose (=perfect reception in the right part of the house)

I hope it's not the same as the ones the poundshops used to sell.

On those if you opened up the base plate the circular UHF loop wasn't connected, just the VHF telescopic ears.

Don't know but there is a pic of it on the link I gave in the OP.

It might give me an avenue for improving them if necessary but they are adequate to my purpose so far.

Is there an optimal angle between the two ears or does it depend on position?

As they are completely untuned and unsuitable for UHF, no.
