Well, heres one for ya, a lc with nearly 300k miles was offered to me, around e5000. Its full toyota history, 2 owner, 5 seat crewcab, auto. In good nick, but makes quite a din on startup, injectors i suppose, lasts for 15 mins, been at that for past year, body and inside good and clean, done little pulling.my mileage is modest, but need a pulling 4x4. Is this thing flaked out, or worth a punt?

That injector rattle when cold is a serious issue. Injectors throwing too much diesel in which clogs a strainer in the oil sump. Engine will starve itself of oil. Rngine gone. I only know this cause it happened to me in a 2006 lc.

Well there is two seperate issues here. Poor running when cold, but getting better when warm, would generally indicate an issuse with the function of the injectors, they would need to be removed and refurbished or replaced.

The issue of injectors casuing oil starvation and wrecking the engine is not related to the function of the injector as such

Its to do the the copper sealing ring in the head failing and allowing compression to get past it. This leads to a build of of carbon. If the injectors are located internally (ie: under the rocker cover) this will cause a build up of carbon inside the engine, which the oil will pick up. This then eventually clogs the oil strainer and starves the engine of oil.

That was the start of the 3L Troopers downfall, happeing when they were just a few years (in some cases months) old.

The landcruiser sounds a bad buy even considering it's crewcabbed

This is worth considering given what you mentioned

Hi, thanks for input, ibouhht it last week, its going grand, the knock is odd, nothing on startup, til its revved, then bad enough. Drive it on to 2500 rpm, and it disappears til you change gear again. Reduces greatly when warm. Tis bought now, so must get it sorted, grand jeep tho...

Keep an eye out for a donor engine would be my advice. What year is it?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Hiya, its 2006, taking it to have the injectors checked in next week, will be interesting to sèe the story...i wonder are the injectors reconditonable, or is it a case of fitting new?

Like the previous poster said keep an eye out for donor engines...wife had a 06 5 seat landcruiser ...engine blew...reconditioned engine and went again 6 months later. Not saying they are all like that just our experience.

Engine blows because mainly they are not serviced correctly, the sump should be removed (not a big job) every few services and oil strainer cleaned, also indicates if washers are leaking as in previous post. There are 3.0 D4D cruisers with 500k kms still going. Excessive diesel rattle needs injectors looking at also but other problem is more serious IMO
