The People of the Year Awards, provide a unique opportunity for the Irish public to honour those who have made a real difference to people's lives, whether as unsung heroes or household names. The awards celebrate the truly inspirational, courageous heroes in Irish communities, those who have all made a difference to our lives over the last 12 months. Presented by Grainne Seoige and Aidan Power, the glittering awards presentation ceremony will be coming live this year from RTÉ studios on Saturday the 5th of December at 21:50 on RTÉ One.

The People of the Year Awards have been organised by Rehab since they began in 1974 and the event has provided a unique opportunity for the Irish public to celebrate the outstanding contributions made by individuals and organisations to life in Ireland. It celebrates the success and leadership of well-known people and also acknowledges our unsung heroes.

Previous high profile winners include Mary Robinson, Rory McIlroy, Katie Taylor, and the late Sir Terry Wogan, Gerry Ryan and Seamus Heaney, and of course so many men, women and children, whose generosity and achievements have touched our hearts and uplifted us all.

My choice for People of the Year awards would be: Davitt Walsh & Caitriona Lucas (RIP).
Davitt Walsh - A man who saved a four month old girl in a drowning tragedy that claimed the lives of five members of her family off the Irish coast has spoken of his experience.
Davitt Walsh said he could "see the distress in the family" as the car they were in sank after entering the water at Buncrana pier in County Donegal.

    Caitriona Lucas (RIP)

Can you imagine if RTE gave the O'Donovan Brothers their own chat show? I'd say it would be hilarious, I'd definitely tune in.

Sound lads. True sportsmen. Delighted for them, and Annalise too. Great woman.
I know sweet F.A. about their sport but they are all class-acts at what they do.
Brightened up the Summer for the whole country and very proud of them.

How tall he walked on his way to stage?! That's how tall you walk when you and friend save the lives of 8 children. Superheroes! :D

This ('Mise Eire' sung by Sibeal) would have made a great Irish Eurovision entry this year......we missed a trick there.

Who is the elderly man and woman that the camera keeps zooming in on constantly. It's getting rather annoying.

Yes indeed, but I guess the acoustics in that place wouldn't be good for a performance like that.

Dear God, I'm so depressed looking at the hardship experienced by these homeless people, particularly the children.

It's not an original song, it was written decades ago so it wouldn't have been allowed as an entry.

The Buncrana drowning tragedy is so horrific, that poor man must have awful nightmares and flashbacks.

The lyrics are by Patrick Pearse but I believe the actual tune is a new one. If it was a Eurovision entry they could retain the title but would have to ditch the current lyrics (which would be easy enough to do).

They are right to take a break after that. We all need a break after that. I don't know how you could ever unwind if you were involved that day. God bless them all.

It would have been nice if this award had been dedicated to clodagh hawe and her 3 children.

Strange format for a show about tragedy... In parts anyway

Something almost anti-climatic about the last couple of awards. No reflection of the worth of the abused male charity[Though as a male it's something I do struggle to see as a very big problem-and its obviously not as big as the reverse situation] and of sport in general)And I love the paraolympic movement for it's role in centralising and not hiding those with disabilities) but the emotion peaked with the two water rescue stories and could only drop off since then.

Seems to me that some of the awards were really earned and well deserved. But some were just sadly in my opinion fillers in.

Which of these is the modern Ireland - the begrudger or the open mind wishing people well.

ofcork: So down to earth and the upper class of am and her brother.

washman3: Sound lads. True sportsmen. Delighted for them, and Annalise too. Great woman.

Your question appears to be weighted due to your clear use of negative and positive terminology.

I did read and miss the likely significance of 'Upper' in 'Upper class' on first reading. Gladly so as both Murphys and Donohoe sibling seemed down to earth people of high class.
