Looking to buy a new t.v, thinking about a Sony 32" HD ready LCD one. Description says it has a freeview digital tuner and a soar view digital tuner. Does this mean I could plug it directly into a satellite dish and saorview ariel or would I still need to buy something like an avira box to get the Irish and English channels ? Thanks in advance.

Freeview is UK terrestrial, not satellite, not widely receivable on our island, outside of Northern Ireland.

Some TVs do have satellite tuners built in, you'd need to provide the model no.

Sorry, Sony KDL32RD433BU , living in Midwest if it makes any difference. Just want the ordinary free to air English channels etc along with the Irish channels

No satellite tuner in that TV, so anyone in the west will need a box for UK channels, except maybe parts of the northwest ...

Ok , thanks , so I'd need to keep an eye out for something that specifically says "satellite tuner " as opposed to free-view digital tuner.

The specs may not specifically say "satellite tuner" but something like DVB-S/S2 tuner and have a screw-on F-connector at the rear.

There are a few here on the Powercity website, Walker, LG for example - http://www.powercity.ie/index.php?min=&max=&features=&brands=&size=&pages=&npages=1&par=10-12&sortprice=&view=LIST&action=brandstory&cat=10-12&numselfeatures=10&numfeatures=&totrows=23

Sorry to hi-jack this thread but you seem to know what you are taking about @ The Cush!

Im looking at a 65inch Sony TV from Harvey Norman (Model number: Sony 65" LED TV | KDL65W859CBU).

Thought Currys.ie had same TV but model number is slightly different (SONY BRAVIA KDL65W857C Smart 3D 65" LED TV)

Doing a bit of Googling, both seem to have a DVB-T2 Freeview HD Tuner. But the KDL65W857C in currys.ie mentions it being a 'twin Irish tuner ready'.

All I want is to have the free saorview channels and free english channels. Which one will do the trick or am I missing something? We have satellite dish and saorview aerial in the house already.

Neither will pick up UK channels for you.

    DVB-T is a terrestrial tunner.

Down south you will pick up RTE1/2 etc via soarview... If the set was used up North itd pick up BBC1/2 via Freeview.

You need to look for a tv wth a DVB-S/S2 tuner for Satellite.

    Something like this one

Thanks for the link! Just did some more googling and they all (as in my 2 links and your one link) have this in actual fact according to the sony website specifications listings. (The spec descriptions are shocking on the electrical websites!)

What they don't have is a twin tuner? What is this for? Do I need it?!

According to the specs for that series of TV, which includes both of those models, each has a terrestrial (DVB-T/T2) and satellite (DVB-S/S2) tuners and so should receive both the Irish channels via aerial and the free UK channels via the satellite dish.

For recording, from the Sony website
    Live recording:

2K models: Allowing you to record live broadcasting, while still enjoying content from other inputs such as Blu-ray Discs, online streaming services and Internet browsing.
4K models (equipped with Twin Tuner): Allowing you to record one channel while watching another or still enjoy content from other inputs such as Blu-ray Discs, online streaming services and Internet browsing.

    Full Timer Recording:

2K models: Allowing you to schedule recordings.
4K models (equipped with Twin Tuner): Allowing you to watch and schedule multiple channels simultaneously.

@ The Cush would you please advise me if you can. You seem to really know your stuff. Im in the same boat as above.

We want a good tv that has saorview and free sat (UK channels) built in. Tv is going on the wall so we don't want a combo box coming out of it. Looking for a 42 inch approx and must be smart with wifi also so we can access netflix.

    Any advice is much appreciated!

See the range of Freesat TVs from Panasonic, LG and Samsung here - http://www.freesat.co.uk/get-freesat/all-tvs. A point to note when setting up a Freesat TV it must be installed with UK as the country to activate Freesat but for Saorview the channels will be installed at random in the 800s because they are seen as out of country, it should be possible to rearrange them from 1 upwards as required.

Other manufacturers incl. Sony will have TVs in their ranges that have FTA satellite tuners, not as user friendly as Freesat but an option. Unable to recommend a TV with Netflix etc.
