Pacific Heat - Netflix (Archer in Australia)

Just added to Netflix today and watched the first episode - I know it's too early to tell, but I definitely had a few bellylaughs watching it.

The best way to look at it is if Netflix made Archer, but set it in Australia. The premise is pretty similar - an "elite" group who is tasked with protecting their country.

Watched 3 episodes. This is garbage.

It's Archer alright. Archer written and animated by transition year students.

Stick with it, I love it!

The reviews for it are abysmal, was sort of interested but the trailer doesn't inspire confidence. Will give it a go at some stage tonight, though.

I only watched the first episode, and it's....not quite as outright dreadful as I was expecting from the reviews it's been getting, to be honest, but somewhere in between medicore and poor.

It's basically just a cheap and largely unfunny cash-in on Archer, and doesn't really make any effort to even rise above that. The animation isn't very good and is quite flat and lifeless...and the voice acting is fairly poor as well.

I got a few laughs though, there are one or two good lines and it wasn't a waste of time but I don't think I could recommend it to anyone.

This is dire. The animation is as ugly as sin, really washed out and off putting. The gags are practically non existent, the characters are really hard to distinguish from each other. But the reason I couldn't even get to the end of an episode was the way the dialogue is delivered.

Sometimes in Archer there's bits of fast back and forth between characters where gags are packed in etc. Here they seem to have tried to copy that but there's no apparent gags, instead just this breathless delivery of lines with no break between them, no sense of pacing whatsoever, and each character's line is about five syllables long, and so this insistent repetitious rhythm kicks in, and the whole scene just blurs into nothing.

It's like someone watched archer and took a kind of cargo cult approach to it, copying (badly) lots of its elements (plot, animation style, dialogue rhythms) but entirely missing anything that actually made it great (really strong characters, genuinely brilliant dialogue, subtlety, subversiveness, a sense of style, a commitment to its own style of humour).

    Awful stuff. Fail.
