My current car failed nct badly and I need to find replacement.
My budget is 2000 euros and it has to be diesel.
I thought first Avensis or Octavia, all taxi drivers are using them so they cannot be bad but after some googling I'm not that sure anymore.
Got advice that Mondeo's are quite good or maybe Volvo s40.
    What would you recommend?
Fuel usage is not important factor here, reliabiltiy and cheap repairs are top.

You're at the bottom end of the diesel market there so condition and history would be more important than the reputation of the brand.

I'd add Peugeot 406 to the mix if you can find a tidy one.

Any Avensis or Octavia you find in decent condition for €2000 will probably have been a taxi and have serious km

Does size matter? What about a MkIV / Early MkV Golf?

S40 diesel can have a few expensive fixes so I'd scratch that off anyway.

I don't have much trust in french cars. Engines very often are great but electronics more often than not is giving lots of troubles.

There are Octavias or Avensis around 150k miles which is not that bad for diesel.
Golf is an option in case something bigger is not available.

I will second that, 406 2.0hdi is a solid car. Might a bit of an issue with insurance.

Most Avensis amd Octavia will be ex taxis. Its only my personal opinion, but I wouldn't buy ex taxi in this country. Looks like most of them tend to drive car to the ground then just replace it, rinse amd repeat.

Reliable old-school TDi engine without particle filters in an aluminium bodied tardis for under 2k. Brand and model have good reputation, and it's deffo not been used as a taxi!

Hard to beat something like this.

07 Mondeo in a nice spec, good miles and nearly 2 years test.

Mk4 golf 1.9tdi, cheap to maintain, cheap to run, bar a few common niggles very reliable.

I've seen that one. Do have any experience with Mondeos? Advert is a bit 'too good to be true'. Good year, long NCT, great price.

Yup, I've driven them extensively and driven them hard. They take massive abuse once serviced correctly. Ive driven plenty with up to 300k km. Last one I had was the newer 09 that had 340k km when I changed earlier this year. Only reason I didn't get a Mondeo this time was I couldn't afford the new model

If that one is a lemon, move on. no shortage of Mondeos out there.

Audi is 2001 so very soon insurance companies won't quote it because it will be over 15 years old. Skoda SuperB, never considered it. Thanks for that. Checking maintenance costs.

    The Audi is 2004.

A Yaris D4D if you can find one. As Bazz said, you're at the very end of the market, you can't really afford to dismiss any brand. A 406 HDi is a lovely thing, I'm speaking relatively of course. Citroen C5 might be worth a look too.
I remember the first gen Volvo S40 had a very sturdy Renault diesel that might be worth a look too.

Older mondeos/fords just dont seem to make money.
3 years ago my garage sold a 07 mondeo for 2300 in good order.
His words were ' and thankful to get that for it'
They also said to me injectors are known to give bother on them in the 2.0ltrs
The 1.8 was meant to be the better engine.

If i was looking for a cheaper diesel i would look at a 2003-2005 passat

Firstly not all avensis' or octavia's are ex taxis a full history check will tell ya all you need to know and it's something a man should be doing on any potential purchase.

Tdci Mondeo of the mid noighties have plenty of issues the early 2.0tdci had chronic injector problems the 1.8 tdci have the ridiculous wet belt design so they're best avoided too.

Hard go wrong with a clean d4d avensis but finding one within budget could be tough.

Best bang for buck imo with regards to reliability and number plate can be got with late reg mk1 octavia's. They still have the A code tdi engines, they're very reliable but most importantly they are cheap to buy and maintain. Parts are very cheap too and there are rakes of them around being broken too should you ever need panels.

These are two that look alright I've no checks done on them though and they haven't much test left so just putting them out there as examples really.

If you could stretch the budget you might get an 08 one which will have cheap tax.
These are generally more reliable and parts are cheaper then the next gen octavia.

Superbs and b5.5 passats while solid engine and mechanical wise are dear enough on suspension parts especially the front steering arms. The mk1 octavia, mk4 golf, bora, Toledo and leon are much cheaper maintain.

Very true...my Avensis was never a taxi and was extremely comfortable on the motorway commute.
