I only thought of it when you said it. I think that has kind of faded in people's memories a bit.

Basil Fawlty: There is too much butter on those trays.
    Manuel: ¿Que?
Basil Fawlty: There is too much butter... on... those... trays.
Manuel: No. No, no, senor. Not... not "on... those... trays"... No, sir. "Uno, dos, tres".

One of the greats of comedy from a time when comedians weren't going for the ultimate shock factor to gain a few laughs. R.I.P. Andrew Sachs and buenos noches Manuel :(

    Rest in peace Andrew.

Don't mention the prank. I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it all right.

Guilty as charged. Have seen every episode of FT multiple times but until that incident he was always just "your man who played Manuel" to me

There's no way you can adequately describe it in writing, like all great comedy. but those many moments in FT where he raises his head in servile pseudo-understanding to Meester Fawlty in the vain hope of postponing a karate chop or kick in the arse.

    Comedic genius.

Nope. I had completely forgotten that happened.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Let's not go nuts; he was a jobbing actor who got a few laughs out of a stereotyping foreigners routine.

Manuel: The Major try to kill Basil!
    Sybil Fawlty: Kill BASIL?
Manuel: No, not Mr. Fawlty. I mean Basil, my little...
Polly: [suddenly, before Manuel can say 'Rat' in front of the health inspector] RATATOUILLE!
    Mr. Carnegie: Basil the little...
Polly: Ratatouille. The chef calls the ratatouille 'Basil' because he puts quite a lot of basil in it.
Manuel: He put Basil in the ratatouille?
    Polly: Yes!
    Manuel: ARGGGHHHHHHHH!
