Chromecast Data Usage

I'll try to explain my query as best I can!

I have a 30g data allowance per month so I can't be streaming or downloading loads of movies etc. But now with Netflix I can download stuff on my Ipad (at a relative's house where there is unlimited broadband) to watch offline. So far so good.

Normally I watch Netflix on my Ipad. But if I get a chromecast to watch my downloaded movies on the TV will this use much data.

Chromecast will only use data if it's sourced online.

Ok, what about on a smart TV? Can I watch downloaded stuff on netflix that way without using much data?

I wonder if you can use a hdmi adapter from your iPad? I'm sure netflix may have thought of this and hobbled the video out though.

I wouldn't be streaming a hell of a lot being capped at 30GB on a smart TV, I use IPTV on mine and can eat that in a day watching football in 720 and 1080 HD content...

Netflix is the problem here. If you use something else then there is no problem watching via chromecast.

Something else as in something that doesn't impose ridiculous restrictions on what you can do with media.

If you think this is bad, wait till you see the DRM netflix is imposing on their 4k streams.

It's not your media as such though, and without the limitations we probably wouldn't get most of the stuff that's available on Netflix.

We already don't get most of the stuff available on Netflix because of regional locking, it's actually a very poor service - this is why people use VPNs and so on.

Regional blocking within Europe will be coming to an end, but Netflix aren't doing it for the craic. There'd be no content if they didn't abide by the conditions the studios set. Sky for example in Ireland own a lot of the rights for content which is why Netflix doesn't have it. You want that content you should expect to pay more to Netflix.

Downloaded a film yesterday and Netflix plays it back through my Chromecast no problem (from cast icon within Netflix). Latest app version on Android 6.0 phone

How did you confirm it played the downloaded content and not just re-streamed from Netflix?

Hah, knew I should have checked that! Just that it played so quickly I assumed it was direct device-to-chromecast over the LAN.

So I shutdown the WAN connection and playback stopped.

I had no idea Chromecast could be directed to connect to a Netflix stream. FWIW it was averaging between 0.5 and 1Mb/s while streaming the movie.
