What benefits do you think you will get from a diesel driving around town doing short trips? When I have to drive around town in mine the mpg becomes poor. Thankfully I have to do it alot.

Also if you have to go out of your way to give it a hard blast down the motorway then you have to consider you may be buying something that really doesn't suit your use.

A good hard drive will cure a lot of problems in cars, not just modern diesels, but as posted already it's not a good solution.

A diesel doesn't work efficiently till it reaches operating temperature and with modern diesels this can be 40+ minutes in current temperatures, so you are asking for trouble with your mileage. An electric car sounds ideal for your journeys but if no access to home charging, or too far away from public chargers, then a hybrid or PHEV would be suitable.

We have a 2012 Focus Diesel. Daily mileage is around 6km in total. Mainly town driving. We have the car over 3 years now and have never had any issues with it. We take it for a spin every 4 or 5 weeks on the motorway.

We wanted a petrol car but couldn't find a suitable one anywhere, garages seemed nearly reluctant to deal with us when we said we wanted petrol.

We had a friend who had a diesel for a short commute and he said he never had any issues so we went and bought the diesel. No regrets so far.

Here's the thing. The modern diesels don't generally create massive & expensive problems until they are about 5-6 years old, with some mileage on them

So if you buy brand new, or nearly brand new, like yourself, you'll probably be grand. The next buyer is the one who will likely suffer...

I spent the last few years selling expensive parts to people who thought diesels for nipping down the shops were a great idea.

The misselling wonder if the century so far.

I can't find the link now but maybe you can but there was a thread here last week and the guy took the car for a motorway blast every week just to clear the DPF...

To me that doesnt make a lot of sense.
You are doing mileage for the sake of doing mileage.
Grand if you are going somewhere but it sort or negates a reason for having a diesel.
The chap mentioned above would drive to get the car warmed up, 30 min in the motorway at 2k plus revs , we will estimate 40/50 miles a week, up to 200 a month , 2/2.5k miles extra a year,
So for someone doing low mileage say 5 to 10 k miles would be doing 20% to 50% more driving .
Surely a petrol would be better in those circumstances
