    Hi

I started a job in July 2016 and it stated 12 month probationary contract. However I am reaching my 6 months with company in Jan. I want to apply for a mortgage. is it possible or reasonable to ask boss about reducing probation period to 6 months for just mortgage application?

    Any advice would be great

They may be willing to provide a salary cert that says you're permanent rather than actually reduce your probationary period. There's no impact on the employer.

But no harm in broaching the topic if you feel you're getting on well there.

Wouldn't that be like some kind of fraud? Using a document to obtain advantage, or somesuch.

OP, it sucks that probation is so long here, but there's a reason that banks don't want to lend to people on probation.

Think about what you'd do if you got laid off (with no compensation).

    Hi

I am just wondering is there a mistake on my contract?

Under my pay review it says my pay will be reviewed after 6 months.  Under pension part of contract it says I will be entitled to pension following 6 months of employment subject to successful completion of probationary period.

    However under my Probationary period it states the following;

Your contract is subject to a probationary period of 12 months in order to assess your skills and suitability for role.  This my be extended at the discretion of the company but will not in any circumstances exceed 12 months.

My question is how can a probationary period be extended at the discretion of company but not exceed 12 months when the probationary period is 12 months.  Is this a typo and should have stated 6 months as my pay review is after 6 months and pension?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Did you ask HR to clarify?

There is no HR as such, the contract was signed by myself and employer and no HR personnel

My boss is currently out of the office until Monday but I just was wondering as I am hoping to go for a mortgage in Jan (when I am in the company 6 months) as I thought that is what my probationary period was but now I see that it is 12 months but I don't know if that is a typo as the section doesn't really make sense.

It depends on your boss, some will, some won't. What you have to think about though is do you want to take on a mortgage whilst you're still on probation in a job? It's risky.

I don't think it will be an issue that I don't pass my probation.  I am not asking for them to lie on my form.  What I am asking them is to see if they can reduce my probation period from 12 months to 6 months and make me permanent?
Even though my contract says 12 months, I was wondering can that change like can your boss make you permanent before your probation period ends if they feel like you are capable of the job?

Yes, I had a similar situation and had an offer of another job so the manager made me permanent.
