Currently playing off 14, looking the change my irons. Im playing with mizuno mx 23 which are about 10 years old so technology has moved on a fair bit since then. The main reason for change would be some improvement in distance. I could have in me to improve to a a 11 or 12 handicap but probably not any better . Any suggestions ?

Purely IMHO your irons are not holding you back, MX23 are as good a cavity back as has been made. Yes there are more springy faced irons out now, but a fair portion of the extra distance is that a modern 7 iron is the same as an older 6 iron. I resurrected an old set of MX20 (the previous model before the 23s) a couple of years ago and there was no difference with my normal set .

That said we all like shiny new things so if you're set on changing I'd look at JPX900 Forged ( even better, you might still pick up a set of the 850 Forged really cheap on clearance now) in the Mizuno range, or anything from Ping G series, I series, Titleist AP1/2. It's whatever appeals to your eye, once they're well fitted to you they'll all perform. Just don't buy into the myth that you need a harder to hit set of irons to improve or get to the next level.

    Don't bother.

Shop around and see what you like. Then see how much extra (if anything) it might be to get fitted and if it's worth it for you.

I wouldn't dream of playing with clubs that aren't fitted again but there's plenty of discussion on that elsewhere.

That's right. Just stand in the shop and wiggle a 7 iron for a bit, or go for a brand you see someone use on TV.
That's sure to work - sure they are all the same anyway.

If your looking for irons for extra distance be aware that your scoring zone will suffer. Your pw will be like a 9 iron so you will need extra wedges to bridge the gap.
Also you may have distance control issues from using cast clubs (Google hot spots on golf irons).
Extra distance also means lower spin so it may be harder to hold the ball on the green.
I don't know your situation but just something to consider.

ok, we get you don't agree with getting fitted, you've made your point elsewhere.
