Vibrating steering wheel driving fast

    Hi,
    Need some help on this.
Got new tyres recently - then at speed 50mph+ the steering wheel will start shaking quite aggressively and then settle down again.
Wheels got re-aligned and balanced and it didn't fit the issue.
4 wheels and tyres got replaced too (temp stop gap) and the issue is still happening.
Fastfit couldn't find any issues either and handed the car back!

    05 Lexus

    Any ideas

    Warped brake discs?

But I'd still bet on unbalanced wheels - even though garage says they are perfect.
    Maybe try another garage.

    What brand are the tyres?

Warped brake disc or wheel bearing?

It can't be wheels themselves unless both sets were bad. :)

Isn't this a sign the wheel bearing is on the way out?

If it happens at motorway speeds like 100-130 kmph it is usually unbalanced wheels or sometime the tyres themselves.

Take car to another tyre place and make sure they remove all weights before they fit new weights. Adding more weights to old ones can sometimes cause issues

That's the thing both the tyres and wheels were replaced!

The reason being is that the 4 original wheels are buckled, and about to be fixed, so he gave me 4 temporary replacement wheels\tyres although I was adamant this was not the issue, as the issue would have been noticeable before I changed the tyres.

I've seen budget tyres cause this, I was in a tyre shop who were trying to balance them on a road force machine and they wouldn't balance correctly.

OP what brand of tyres are they?

    Bridgestone
    Bridgestone Potenza RE002 92W Fuel Rating-F Wet grip rating-C Noise rating-70db

City driving I'll have no issues, it appears to start when on the motorway when in speeding from 50mph onwards. And heres the thing - if I were to do a 15mile journey. The first 5 miles will be fine - then this issue will kick in whereby the steering wheel will start vibrating and it feels like the 4 wheels will fall off! then after slowing down for 5 miles later it will normalize and I can accelerate again for the remaining 5 miles.

Could be a deformed tyre, a premium tyre like that should balance easily.
You could bring it to another shop to confirm.

Looks like a resonance issue. Worn bushing perhaps or a loose turret where the spring attaches to the chassis above the wheel? Should hear a lot of knocking if there is. Warped disc can be felt through the brake pedal sometimes. Wheel bearings on the way out? Jack up the car and try rock the wheel at 6 at 12 o'clock.

Something may have broken the camels back.

Could be buckled wheels, or not properly balanced tyres.

    Get them balanced somewhere else.

Failing that, have your ball joints checked.

Are you using cheap Chinese tyres.. they might just be balls of shïť.

Are the wheels genuine ? A wheel that doesn't fit the hub right could also cause this - i've seen it before when a wheel was put on without the spigot ring (a little washer/ring used to sit aftermarket wheels correctly on a hub.

The original wheels came with the car, the other 4 again are just 4 spares.

The balance is wrong I can 99.9% guarantee the wheels are counter balanced we see it every day I can't understand why some fitters can't get it right. I know they will tell you the balancer is saying it's right but it's a machine and will only show what weights it needs so if you do not know how to use it correctly than the job can not be done right.

Let's say the wheel only needs 35g on the inner part of the wheel and it's slightly off centre when it's out on spin again and it wants 15g directly across from the 35g still on the inner part. Most lads will put on the 15g because they do not know any better and were not trained properly from the beginning. That is countering the 35g.

Apparently the left brake disk is compressed against the wheel and the wheel will not turn because of this, and this is the cause of the noise.

What I find bizarre is that 3 places had the car up and checked 'everything' and couldn't find an issue.

    Something else is wrong there.

I suspect they put too many weights on one spot and its interfering with the brake system.

I'd get a run-out test done. This is to test for and egg shaped tyres (and any buckles in the wheel)

    What 05 Lexus is it?

If its a 05-10 shape GS300/450h, these are know for seizing the rear caliper.

    IS200se uk model.

The issue occurs on 2 sets of wheels\tyres.

It could be the suspension system itself. Can you lift car and check everything is tight?

Out of curiosity did the tyre place used an air gun to tighten the wheel nuts after putting them on? rather than using a wheel brace or torque wrench.
I know some mercedes trucks used to suffer from brake failure after the tyres were changed. tyre fitters used airguns to ram on the wheelnuts and warpp the discs/drums.
Maybe in the same manner here, damage might have been done

I'll second a sticky caliper - if it takes time to start wobbling, I'd guess it's possibly heat related expansion of matrial i.e. the hub face against the wheel.

Spray a drop of water onto each disc/hub after a spin - if there's a lot of steam there's a sticky caliper.

    You sir are indeed correct.

Basically the left passenger caliber was stuck against the wheel. I definitely noticed this whilst on a hill, in neutral and handbrake was off - and the car not moving!

The mechanic took it off, cleaned it amongst other things and it appears to be fine now.

brought the car on the M50 and gave it a good blast and the issue is resolved - it may come back, but at least I know what it is.

I had 8 different people\garages look at this all giving different opinions. With one quote of 680e to fix it.
