Polled cattle

Was Dehorning calves today, one heifer out of HCA (Easy calving limousine) had no buds at all. I didn`t think HCA was a Polled animal (her dam is a Charli and had horns as a calf), but it left me thinking how handy it is not having to de-horn them.
Are there any other AI bulls that are polled that are worth using?

Theres that bull from progressive genetics, Ildalgo. he's a polled bull. think he's only new so not sure what he's like. i was thinking of using him last year but left him to see how he's rated first.
its great when you get ones you dont have to dehorn. ive a few polly's, you know their calves wont have any every year. very stressful for them. in saying that i'd an angus i bred to a charolaois bull, no buds or nothing until he was about 6 months and then they started to develop. happens from time to time.

Yep I was thinking that might be the case, as it stands there's nothing to debud at the moment. I am hoping shes a poll but I don't think the bull is, cant see any info on the munster ai website. I must start using Polled bulls from now on, its an ordeal trying to debud suckler calves. You would think I was going to execute them, plus the mothers go mental aswell. If they could have got out to me while I was doing it then I would be a goner for sure!!

Often find limos are very late developing buds, often have to leave them til a month before there's anything at all to find. I think they have a P or Pp after their name if they have a polled gene, see Alwent Hitman or Don Juan.

yes i think polled bulls are the way forward.ive often left them a tad too long to do and the strength of some of those calves is unbelievable!
an ordeal for man and beast!
the smell of the de-horner dosnt help either.

Yip, I see Hellios is polled as well.- http://bova-ai.com/?page_id=4630

''First POLLED limousin bull at stud in Ireland.'' But it also says that only 50% of the calves show the polled gene.

The reason for that is cattle get one copy of every gene from the bull and one from the cow. The polled gene is dominant (once there's one copy the calf is polled). He has one copy of the polled gene from one parent and one copy of non polled from the other parent. He can pass one or the other to his calves hence 50% show the gene.
He's heterozygous polled (one polled gene and one polled gene). To get 100% polled calves you need homozygous polled (2 polled genes) that way whichever gene is passed on the calf will be polled. You'll see both terms more and more in AI catalogues.

Progressive (& Munster) have Idalgo (Homo Polled Terminal Limousin), AHC (Homo Polled Simmental) who I think is a mighty bull (Think Eurogene have just brought a son of his into their selection too) and OEO (Homo Polled Limousin for plain heifers)....

They also have a Hetero polled: CH Virgil & SA Joker but they are really only for pedigrees (€€€).

Dehorning is a pain in the ass.....
