I am thinking of buying a 2005 Mercedes CLK 1.8 petrol 160bhp. Is there anything in particular to watch out for when checking the car out? Thanks.

Make sure all the electrics work, but most importantly the timing chains need attention at the 100K mile mark as they are known to stretch, factor in a timing chain and sprockets change when buying unless there is proof of this being done already.

Cheers. Any idea how much this might cost and what are the symptoms? Thanks.

On cold startup you might hear a chain rattle, in extreme cases a check engine light will stay on as the timing will be slightly off. The cost of doing the job can vary, you need to call around a few garages for a quote. There were some guys out near bluebell that were doing this job on a regular basis and I think it was 500-700 euro, I cant recall the name. If the chain has not been done by 120,000 then factor that into the price, if it has been done there should be receipts for the work, don,t go by tippex marks on the cam cover.

Thanks for that. Appreciate the info. Would the electrics and auto box be considered generally reliable?

Whats it worth? 2005 Mercedes CLK 1.8 Kompressor Elegance with 65000klms and good service history. Needs tyres and a service plus a little bodywork. Thanks.

The autobox on them is reliable as long as it gets regular fluid changes. I think the recommended interval is about 60K KM. If you can find a facelift model, the quality is much better over the pre-facelift.

Thanks. Do you when the facelift version appeared and also what are the differences so I might identify which on it is? It is a 2005 car. Thanks again.

2005 will not be facelifted obviously.

Think it will be around late 08 or 09. New model came out in 2011

No, I think the facelift was sometime in 2005. The model was discontinued in 2009.
Facelifts have clear headlights and different dials for the speedo.

My bad. Read this as CLS not CLK.

Cheers. Will check. Any idea what the difference on the speedo dial is?
