Aer Lingus online checkin questions

Anyone tried checking in via website or app in the last 12 hours? Both let me go through most of the process then app tells me online check-in not available for my flight and the website just crashes.

Trying to check in for MAD-DUB this evening.

possibly due to an aerclub change over?

I've noticed seats available for selection during check in for my flight seems unchanged since yesterday evening so I guess it's not just me.

I really don't want to have to check in at the airport. Not sure I'd remember how :D

Was any amendment made to your booking since you first made it ? That often stops you checking in online.

Or if the flight is overbooked they will often stop online checkin.

No changes and Aer Lingus twitter telling me no problems. Now I need to arrive early at the airport and I'll end up with a crappy middle seat.

I flew over with Ryanair and it was perfectly acceptable. I may be staying with them in future. Funny how one bad experience will have that effect.

You need advanced passenger information when going to Spain, possibly issues with this, make sure you add this before trying to check in.

Aer Lingus systems really don't like the passport card

Its free to check in at the airport either at self service or at a desk and there will be a seat for everyone with a ticket on the plane so no panic

Good point about API. Also I'm using the passport card.

Not in a panic but I like to choose my seat and go straight to security as I usually travel with just hand luggage.

Well, I have recently been in your situation, I had to check in at the desk, the old school way! But the very kind lady gave me an upgrade to the exit row for free at the desk, so If you ask nicely, there may be a benefit to checking in at the desk, provided there is availability!

I didn't say anything but I did get row 1 :) . Maybe the Twitter guys left a note on my booking.

Try to board ASAP as space over row 1 is limited and nothing can be left at your feet for take off.

Check in at Madrid is done on the (old) IAG/BA system as Iberia do the ground handling, it absolutely hates the passport card (the normal EI check in normally lets you)

So that probably was the root cause

Aer Lingus, via Twitter, has confirmed to me that the app (and the website apparently) doesn't accept the Passport Card.

That's a bit rubbish over a year after their introduction. As Spain is one of my main destinations, I'll be on Ryanair until this is sorted.

I've also left my first ever app review on the Google Play store. 1 star!

Just had a thought re not being able to check in with the passport card

If I check in with my main passport number but present my passport card at the airport could that cause me a problem?

Firstly you don't need a passport to check in for most destinations with Aer Lingus (Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic and others need it)

For a ticket bought online through aerlingus.com I've never had an issue with the passport card, if the ticket was sold by another airline then you will have problems.

Check in at the desk in Dublin and the self serve machines can be a problem with the card, though curiously in Dusseldorf its easier at the check in desk with the passport card than a passport...

You should always carry the ID used for API in case there is a manual check in/boarding due a technical issue, never had an issue myself swapping around the ID used
