Anyone been to China to witness the apparent lack of pride or basic maintenance of their communities?
Just one youtube video granted, but it's a side of China I haven't seen or been aware of previously. Always thought they were an inventive and resourceful bunch.

    Okay...

... To take this even slightly seriously, I'll respond with "China, inventive" ... What world are you living on? Even Biggles got this one right.

Sure wasn't "made in china" always a byword for quality?

It's the "tragedy of the commons effect" no one owns stuff so no one cares.

Built quickly, at low cost, with all sorts of corruption happening at all levels. But given the size of the country, it does depend on where you are; I've lived in cities that look like something out of 2000 A.D., and utter, utter shotholes.

Look at the size of China. You are bound to have a sh1tload of places that are derelict or not maintained. You wouldn't have to travel too far around Ireland to find half-built houses and other bits and pieces left to go to rack and ruin.

Have you ever been to Poland? You should see what they have done to East Prussia.

I have been to china a couple of times. Was in a city about 500 miles from Beijing. Taxi drivers would only take me the long way using the nice streets. They would not take me in to areas that did not look good. Dont know if that was a rule or etiquette.

And beijing it'self was a great city. I saw no litter in the touristy areas and while the more deprived areas were run down and shacklike- they were still as tidy as the residents could manage.
But that is based on a few days visit. Its a big city and country!

Only thing that pissed me off about china was the food and the spitting. They spit everywhere!

Is it not to do with a culture where your family are your social welfare so family is everything which lead to a turning in to the family then to the clan and after that civic society. Which in turn leads to less value being placed on shard public spaces.

Maybe not since they started making cheap knock offs, but historically I thought they were ahead of the game in weaponry and how they lived.

Well yeah but remember this is the same China that lost both Opium wars despite numerical advantage and home advantage due to their backwardness.

The ghost cities of China look like a giant chamber pot about to hit a fan.
Apparently the plan is to move hundreds of millions of rural dwellers into cities, thing is they can't afford to pay for expensive apartments.
