Ok, we recently bought a new motor, but I have decided not to do away with the old passat just yet.

Earlier in the year (around Jan) it started to develop intermittent, and random issues when starting it.

It was eventually diagnosed as needing new crankshaft sensors, so got them and fitted them.

A few weeks later, started experiencing same problem, this time problem diagnosed was rotten wiring loom, and paid quite a bit for an auto spark to fit a new one.

Starting problems returned to haunt me a month or two later. The car usually starts no problems initially, lets say first thing in the morning, or even when she's been idle for a few hours.

Was describing my problems to a vw mechanic, he reckoned (the fact she was trying to start/turning over) that it was a fuel pump, he said they're starting to give trouble (the pumps) so I bought a new pump (genuine), and it was fitted during last service which was about five weeks ago.

Everything was grand, I thought the pump had finally solved my problem, but alas they've come back again.

Just this evening, I jumped into the passat (the wife was away in the other motor, and my work vehicle is getting new wraps) to meet a mate in town, had a coffee and bite to eat, I'd say we were no longer than an hour, when I got back to the car, she refused to start again.

My usual ritual when it doesn't start is to let it sit for a while, maybe lock the car, open the car etc. Wait a few minutes, try again and it usually fires up after a few minutes.

Took me about twenty minutes this evening though.

So to sum it up, this year alone the cars had:

    New crankshaft sensors
    New loom
    New fuel pump

And still the random starting issues remain.

    She's a 2.0 TDI 06 model.

She's for sale next month, but my conscience wouldn't let me sell it until this problems sorted once and for all.

    Anyone any ideas?

Did you get it scanned. Error codes may give a clue to what's going on.

Problems like this are a nightmare. My father-in-law's 2.0l 2001 Petrol Passat was throwing up errors a few years ago, but pointing to nothing concrete. After a new MAF, fuel filter, plugs and leads, it turned out to be the slow death of the petrol pump that was the culprit.

My Astra had similar problems, would start sometimes then wouldnt , was told it was fuel pump, then someone else said have checked the fuel pump relay, this was it, a faulty relay, so might be worth a look.

Actually, you know what I'm just thinking.

The EGR valve needed a good clean out a few years ago, perhaps she's ready to give up the ghost completely?

That would prevent it starting I presume?
