Mudguards advice

Ok, that time of year again, I've picked up a new trek 1.5 as a winter bike and stripped it down and rebuild it with 105 11 speed, I'm running 25mm tyres on it, I'm sick of the clip on stuff and want something robust, still black plastic but ones that fit on to the bike permanently , the bike has the fittings to take them, I have a set of zéfal shield R30's that work sound on my other bike but I'd like something full length and permanent for this bike.......

What mudguards are you using on a trek 1.1, 1.2 or 1.5 ?

    Thanks in advance

    Cheers zip

Used cruds mk2 in the past, but recently moved to 25 mm tyres ( on wider rims) and cruds wouldn't fit. Got some bbb slim guards from lbs.
They can fit onto the QR, but I have them attached to the lugs on the rear. Somehow my winter bike (old model specialised allez) has no lugs on the front, so I have it on the qr there. They slide onto a fitting attached to the brakeset so can be removed, but they are quite firm and tidy.
Only thing for me is that I didn't yet manage to instal the front part of the rear mudguard yet - bit short on clearence on my frame, but I need to revisit that one. Worked well on few spins so far except the bit of crud getting on my front mech from aforementioned rear failure. I think with a bit of time / tinkering I may sort this.
All in all, neat and firmer than the cruds. About 50euro iirc.

With 25mm tyres you won't get most guards to fit with safe clearance.

I used a pair of these and they worked well with 25mm :

I have a Trek Madone 4.5 with 25mm tyres and SKS race blades fit okay to this bike.

I had those giant fenders and after about 4 weeks, one of the plates connecting the fender to my back break snapped off. I have 25mm tyres and race blades work fine for me.

    ???

I've never had anyone complain on club spin.

    ???

I've never had anyone complain on club spin.

They give no spray protection to the riders behind you at all, I had one of them and swapped to a full rear guard and added a tail onto it to bring it lower again.

Try a set of these: http://bbbcycling.com/accessories/fenders/BFD-22

I suppose, tbh I hadn't really gone out when it was really spilling down.
Then only sportives where nobody had any guards

FWIW - I found the race blades quite flimsy. Both front and rear snapped where the lower support joins the mudguard itself. I've got what remains of the rear one installed in the front mount and a new seat post mounted rear. ' won't be going near them again.

If you have proper mounts these are decent enough. 25mm will fit easily 28mm will depend on rim/tyre

Have two full winters with them no issue

Fit cheap wheels, full mudguards concentrate all dirt/grime on wheel tyre and a dirty rim will wear fast

Found the race blades crap...front one snapped at the mounting bracket after about 4 weeks...
    I've a 3/4 one now.

One potential thing to be aware of with these is the size of your brake caliper. I had one for a few years and while it worked very well to keep muck off my back, on upgrading the groupset to 105 a year ago, the bracket wasn't long enough to come under the brake caliper as the 105 calipers are about 50% deeper than the Sora calipers I was coming from. This may no longer be an issue of course.

Also, as others have pointed out, they don't spare anybody behind you and even if out on your own, you're still going to get crud down the back of your calf and front mech, nor does it solve the problem about crap thrown up by the front wheel

    Between tight tyre/mudguard interface,

....worked for me anyway. Running 28's on my Audax bike and very tight front clearance so that leaves and crud were building up and rubbing.
    Sorted.

Another mm or two can be gained by wedging a tyre lever between the tyre and the mudguard bracket before tightening the brake pivot bolt. Stops the bracket from dropping down as you tighten.

SKS Bluemels for my winter bike too for past 2 years. Once you take time to fit them accurately, you can pretty much forget about them.
