After a previous thread and some more research iv seen some nice passats around that I'd like some information on. Ideally from people that Own(ed) one in the specific year and model.
    06 1.9 diesel Passat.
I'm interested in the Highline spec so any information at all would be greatly appreciated such as:
    Any well know issues?
What to look for at viewing(apart from usual)?

Also would 230,000km's be too high on this model? I understand it's alot to do with how the car was cared for but would this type of milage be too high in people's opinions?
    Any help appreciated.

The best thing about those Passats is that they never fully break, they are just full of gremlins that half break, occassionally and expensively.

They'd be fond of handbrake buttons, handbrake motors, keys, key readers, wishbone bushes, rear wheel bearings and a little bit of whatever else is going in terms of quirky electrical issues tbh.

I think 06 is too early to be a BXE, but if it's a BXE engine code, they are fond of throwing a con rod at random too, writing off the engine.

Then aside from all that, you will have the general aging diesel items to worry about with that car, particularly clutch and DMF and injectors.

I know 230 kms is only 130 ish miles buton unless it's a low owner car with a good history i'd gladly pass.

They are due a timing beltbelt every 5 years or 210k so it's technically due it's second belt by now too. If it's never had one, definitely factor that in.

Id be more inclined to look at a 2005/b5.5 model rather than a 2006. A lot of the early B6 models were troublesome...and it took VW a while to get them fairly right.
On the other hand, one of these is going to cost 600-700 to tax, whereas a post-2008 model will be less than half of that...

I had a 2005 b5.5...and put about 200k km on it. I sold it to a neighbour who has put another 100k on it and it's still going strong. I originally bought it in the UK with 15000 miles on it...

I'll be honest and say I'm not a fan of the older shape so have pretty much settled on the b6. I understand I asked for issues but I guess my question at this stage is does the b6 have any more issues than any other car?
Surely most cars have issues? I understand the car I get will likely be 10 years old so just hoping to get something that will go when to looked after well.
Also on the timing belt change iv seen differing times online so it's good to stick with 130,000miles or 5 years which ever comes first I presume??

Every car has issues especially when your looking at 10 or 11 year old cars but as outlined above early B6 Passats had specific issues. The timing belt interval on the 1.9 TDi is something like every 60k miles afaik. Clutch and flywheel is another thing you need to look out for but that is standard wear and tear on most modern diesel cars. Plenty of B6 Passats around for sale but a fair share of them are tired old dogs or have been modified beyond recognition. Ideally you would want to find one with a good service history and owned by the same person for a good number years.

I have a 06 1.9 TDI passat and I love it. I got it about 5 years ago and I had to do the timing belt then. I've been lucky and had no major problems with it since. only little things like bushes and handbrake button (as mentioned by others) but all under 100 euro to fix.

Great car and I'm glad I got it.

Thanks for all the info. I completly understand the car will more than likely be around 10/11 years old so ideally low owner and full service history would be ideal. Hopefully the one I pick up will be decent and will go when needed. As long as it's reliable I'll be happy with it!

Just curious here, if the car is around the 120,000miles mark it should be just onto its second timing belt but is the interval fir the next change lower then the 60,000Mile mark? Ie. Do timing belt change intervals get lower the more times the timing belt is changed?

No, the intervals stay the same.

If anyone can help me here I'd appreciate it. A 06 b6 passat with 230,000 km should have gone through 2 timing belt changes? Is this correct?
And should the clutch and dmf also have been changed twice? Or is clutch and flywheel done as needed?

If the timing belt interval is 60,000 miles as people said, then yes it should have been changed twice.

The clutch and flywheel wouldn't be a servicable item as such. Most do 150,000-200,000 miles before needing replacement. It's also not too expensive any more compared to what it once was.

I bought a 06 B6 Passat 1.9 TDi just over a year ago and I genuinely think that with the small money they're making, they're terrific value for money if you get one that's been well looked after. I just think in terms of specification and general comfort, they are impossible to beat as an overall ownership prosepct for the money. the 1.9TDi is also very decent on fuel, i get a solid 50mpg in mine. Its not the quickest admittedly but perfectly adequate. Remember too the model kept on going (After a face lift admittedly) until the end of 2014. I can only add to whats been already said regards the timing belt and possible issues with the parking brake but all I can say is that when I was looking for mine is that there was an awful amount of rubbish out there. They sold in huge numbers in 2006/07 though so there is no shortage of them
