Some people here seem impossible to please. This thread begs the question, what Irish comedian is funny then?

Any comedian Irish or not (unless you're Bill Bailey) who arrives on stage with a musical instrument can f*ck right off.

    Andrew Quirke is a genius

    comedy is subjective

the old saying > you can't please all of the people all of the time..certainly applies to comedy

has to be the toughest profession of all

You are correct of course, but there is a certain aspect which is fairly consistent across the board in terms of what represents quality. The likes of Katherine Lynch are just ****e, whereas the likes of Des Bishop just might not be to some peoples tastes. It seems pretty clear to me that Bishop is a superior comedian to Lynch for example.

Only it appears the that no Irish comedian appeals.

Who is a good Irish comedian then?

This one time I met Andrew Maxwell in the street and randomly hugged him.
To this day I don't know why I did that.

That's the funniest thing I've heard where Andrew Maxwell was involved.

How can anyone hate David O Doherty? I've always found him funny.

Moran definitely, Dave Allen was ahead of his time.

There aren't many I'd hate tbh. Ed Byrne and Rosenstock I don't rate much. Jason Byrne can be funny but the whole mad thing grates after a while, same with Tiernan.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

I don't think I've ever seen him on anything else, but he is funny on that show alright. Anytime himself or Bob Mortimer are on, you know it's going to be a good one.

    Damo and Ivor was amazing.

The perfect sitcom, one which contained no boggers gong on about their farms.

I can't say I've ever seen a sitcom with "boggers" going on about their farms.

Seen Jason Byrne on TV lastnight, really really terrible this was a running joke at his show.
How does this chancer get away with it. The ould Mad whore sthcick.
Jason to audience member 'So you married him'
    Member 'Yes'
    Jason 'Him!'
    Member 'Yes'
Jason 'Sure why would ya marry that lad'

    Or other profound wit like

Jason. 'You came with you parents?'
    Member'Yes'
    Jason'Your mother and father?'
    Member 'Yes'
Jason'So you brought your mother and father to a 'comedy' show
    Member 'Yes'
Jason'So you thought be a good idea to bring your Mam and Dad to a comedy show' etc etc etc.

This tiresome rhetoric goes on ad finitum. Amazingly people were laughing. People are easily pleased!.

He is essentially childlike. As much as he doesn't make me laugh he does seem a good lad. He's lucky the comedy worked out because I couldn't think of an alternative career for someone like him.

Amazingly he has headlined the Edinburgh festival for Donkeys years and the shows always sell out quickly.

As with politicians, societies end up with the comedians they deserve.

Most people don't want to be challenged or surprised or made to think by clever or subversive or surreal comedy.

They want some moron to shout dick jokes while they drink pints.

The comedians the Irish comedy scene produces are simply a reflection of this reality.

That traveller woman (can't remember her name- maybe Katherine Jenkins?) who somehow had her own show on Network 2 a few years back

She played lots of different characters.
    Anyway, she wasn't very good.

    We're all in this psy-op together.🤨

Nobody headlines that festival. Where did you hear that nonsense?

Years ago I remember he came on the Late Late Show. Gay was hosting a one off devoted totally to comedy. He came on and was doing some stupid skit where he was orgasming and licking the fingers of these fake hands on sticks. An audience member got thick and pulled them off him.

One of the funniest things I ever heard on TV was something Tommy Tiernan said. It was during that documentary he made about making it in America. It was something about him hoping to get a HBO special. I pissed myself laughing when I heard him say that.

Unfortunately I think he was serious.
