BBC: Jenson Button: McLaren driver to retire from F1 after Abu Dhabi GP
I go into this weekend thinking it's going to be my last race. I think that's the best way.

At this moment in time, I don't want to be racing in F1 beyond this year.
Abu Dhabi will bring his race tally up to 305 - one fewer than Michael Schumacher, but some way behind record holder Rubens Barrichello (322).

So ... what's next? Top Gear?

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

He won't have that much time to do other racing during the F1 season anyway - isn't he going to be doing McLaren sponsor stuff at all the GPs next year anyway; at least that is what I think was said when his stepping away was originally announced.

Still contracted to race, if McLaren want him to, the following year too unless that has changed.

He'll be doing a mix of development work in the simulator & events for sponsors. With McLaren adding Zak Brown expect them to add a few more of those, but they aren't necessarily events at GP weekends. There was an expectation that he would only attend a half dozen or so GP weekends. He could easily have time to do some shooting for Top Gear ;)

I could see him giving WEC a go as well.

Not so sure about this with no Honda presence in WEC. Maybe some of the North America Endurance Cup races if Honda have a DPi entry.

Obvious announcement was obvious, why the stupid charade about a gap year up until now...

I think it was something he obviously agreed with Ron Dennis but with Ron Dennis now gone perhaps he decided he was not interested anymore. A pity really would loved to have seen Jenson get another year as I really think Mclaren-Honda are going to be much much better next year. Jenson has been a great ambassador for the sport and he is a great driver and a gentleman hope he has a good final race.
There is a great article about Mclaren-Honda in this weeks Autosport and maybe it is online too.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
